cubs are falling out of it by the day and look to be sellers. Mark Leiter Jr. would be a great add to the bullpen. He's under team control so he would cost a little more, but a combo of him and yan gomes wouldnt cost the world and would leave us just looking for that 1 big bat and maybe 1 more bench bat if that 1 bat is not an outfielder.

Leiter is having a great year but doesnt throw very hard, so i think there are probably better options out there to help the bullpen.

Idk if he would even be available because he's essentially a cubs legend, but Kyle Hendricks as the SP option would be a great addition as well. Proven veteran, can not only eat some innings but give us actual quality innings while doing so. He's also not a hard thrower so it might be nice to give a little different look in the rotation compared to eury, sandy, luzardo, and cabrera. leaves you with 2 crafty guys in him and garrett with the rest being flamethrowers. due 14 million this year with a team option for 15 million next year.

james paxton is another guy who might make sense for the rotation. injury riddled the last 2 years, he's finally healthy and kind of on fire and a free agent at the end of the year,

If it does mean he is willing to spend money, the question becomes how much money. If it's 1 million, that doesnt do anything for us and limits us.

what id assume they end up doing is buying on free agents to be. So no long term money due and likely lesser prospects that have to go in any deal. Essentially he puts some money up for the rest of the year (how much to be determined in the next few weeks) without investing long term. I think that ends up being the most likely scenario. Say, Gomes, Candelario, and a righty reliever and back end starter who are free agents to be. Improves the team for a modest investment for the rest of the year (offset by im sure they would dump some stallings and/or floro money and maybe cooper if they get a 1b), and they can make the argument they are going for it.

I got July 26 @ Tampa for the reemergence, and if that is within the Super2 range, a second call up date of July 31 or Aug 1 vs PHI at home. They don't need him home vs Detroit. Both of those should deflect him from Super2 status, especially the Philly ones but it's hard to judge exactly where the line will be. I bet the Marlins know though and this is a real gangster .119-.122 service days just under a super 2 calculation. This means club controlled 2024-2026 so they can really leverage that extension. This saves them literal millions. One caveat would be if he is so awesome, he gets service time status like Rutschman or Julio which might happen, but we'll see.

This is GANGSTER and the announcement came with a workload management reference to deflect against grievances. I love it with a front office hate, I hate it for Eury until he gets an extension.

This is fucking insanity. Honestly the Cueto part even more than the Eury part. If we needed any more evidence that Sherman is going to penny-pinch us into oblivion, here it is. Gotta get that return on investment on Cueto, even if it torpedoes the season. Jesus Christ, the only way this is not a disaster is if they trade for a legit major league starter before Eury's spot in the rotation comes around again. They have about 10 days.

What's the comparable here? Offering Eury for Luis Robert? You don't not listen either way, but that's a near impossible move to figure out in all directions.

You know what would be GANGSTER? Signing him to an 8 or 9 year contract. This is putting your finances above winning, right after you made a statement just to the contrary.

I advocate for signing him today to a Hunter Greene extension and have for weeks.

But until that happens, the smartest things to do with Eury are (1) protect his arm, and (2) make him cheaper. They are accomplishing both of these things and we can applaud the front office, while feeling annoyed for Eury. This is not about finances over winning. This is about Eury can throw probably 25+ more competitive innings, and yes, there is the side benefit of the super 2. Also to mention, this is skipping him 1-2 starts depending on when he is back. Are we going to be upset over skipping him literally 1-2 starts from when he is likely coming back?

I've said this numerous times - Twins fans cried bloody murder with Johan in 02/03 and the organization was right. We don't have to like this - but the organization is right here and kudos for them for making the tough call.

I can't even find any evidence that they sent him down to keep down his innings in 2002, looks like he started the year in AAA in 2002, got called up to the majors as a starter, and then worked out of the bullpen in September. He had worked out of the bullpen for the Twins in the previous 2 seasons. No minor league stint in 2003. Started in the bullpen then moved to starter later in the year. Also, how you have knowledge of what Twins fans were feeling back in 2002 and 2003 I'm not even going to ask.

completely right on Santana. It's just complete revisionist history. And he's been making the same nonsensical point for like a year. He went down and developed one of the best changeups in the history of baseball. that is what happened with him. Not some grand plan for a badly struggling former rule 5 draft pick to gradually increase his innings.
