  • I mean personally I'd overpay for Jaime Barria. Him and Eury can alternate starts and Barria slots in the pen during the Eury start. I'd also go out and get a decent long reliever and start using Lindgren and Soriano as openers.

Basically Eury slots in every third time his spot comes up. Then Barria the next time up and then the opener. This also allows Barria to be stretched out and used more in the pen as well.

Just like it was their "plan" to send him down to AAA a couple weeks ago. Every day further into the season we get and we remain in a playoff spot, that "plan" becomes more and more impossible to enact.
It's solely Rogers, Cueto, and Cabrera regarding that the way I see it. So I wouldn't bet against them sending him down for 3+ weeks when those guys are back. I would be more surprised if they pitch him 7 more times and call it a season.

Maybe they could do something like 9-10 more 4 inning starts, and just kick that off maybe July 26th. That roughly sets him up every 7th game for Tampa, Philly, Yankees, Dodgers, Tampa again, Dodgers again, Brewers, Mets/Brewers, and Pittsburgh. He should have some playoff innings that way, and this is effectively just some ASB resetting the rotation days. That's some bang for your buck against 8 contenders and a do or die game against Pittsburgh (last series) for the wild card maybe. Kind of like this.

If Rogers is that hurt and Cueto "just sucks," they need a starting pitcher as much as they need a major bat also.

I like the idea if the Angels sell (love Sandoval also if they can get him. Might be a good buy low), but they do have to convince that one guy they have to resign with them. I find that tough but maybe they really tank with Trout out.

        • Speaking of Cueto. They can’t rehab him forever, right? At what point do they have to make a decision? All signs point to him just being done.

I think he’s allowed one more start and then they have to make a decision or I guess they can come up with a fake injury but at that point if he isn’t actually injured why not just cut him?

            • Sean reynolds called up. Guessing lindgren sent down. Great story and he’s been really good the last couple months. Converted hitter. He was an earlyish pick as a hitter and was one of the worst hitters in the minors. Makes griffin Conines plate discipline look like Arraez

I'll say July 29th for a pick out of the hat cut date. They can probably figure out the rehab time and keep as a last guy on the roster. I can't imagine he is this bad, but maybe I am wrong and is just totally cooked.

If he is healthy and they are going to see if he just needs to be more psyched to be throwing in real games, it would probably make sense to try him out for any garbage time 7/14-7/16 (@Balt), and then maybe a start July 21-23 against Rocks (home) and July 28-30 Det (home). That's about a soft as an ease in one could hope.

The fact that his career might be over you would think would be enough motivation to pitch well in AAA.

                  • has cueto had a single outing since he got here (spring, regular season, minor leagues) where he hasnt gotten completely torched? I think he's just done and used us as a chance to get 1 last contract and then didnt care. He was never getting another significant contract after this one anyways. Cant blame Kim on that one, i liked the move.

                    • dating back to spring, he had 2 starts, one where he gave up 5 ER in 2 innings, then 6 in 1.2 innings. then he threw one inning against minnesota and gave up 4 in 1 inning. Then in his rehab starts its been 6 ER in 2.1 innings, 0 in 2.2 but gave up 4 hits, and since then its been 4 in 3.2, 6 in 4.2, 7 in 4.2, and then 5 in 6 innings. The guy is done. Maybe he can be a long reliever for a try once just to say we tried, but there is literally 0 indication since he signed here that he can be not terrible.

                      • im pretty bullish on reynolds as an option for the next few years. Throws really hard and has figured out his control. his numbers are good this year and they include his first 2 appearances where he gave up 6 of his 12 ER for the whole year. Since those 2 outings its been a 1.39 ERA and a .99 ERA with a 44/16 k/bb ratio in 38.2 innings

Joins Nick Fortes as the only other player on the team that the Marlins drafted as a hitter.

Gotta give them time. It’s only year 6 or 7 of the rebuild

                            • A quote from Bruce regarding deadline plans:

“This has been one of the most exciting seasons in Marlins history, and I am thrilled with what we have accomplished thus far,” he said. “The job is not done. We want to be in the 2023 postseason. I am prepared to give Kim and her staff the resources she needs over the next month to help the club.”

What exactly being "prepared to give Kim and her staff the resources they need" means is open to interpretation.

idk, but what else could that mean besides "im willing to spend a little money at the deadline to acquire players for the stretch run"?. what other resources could he give her that would help the club? casual fridays to boost morale?

If it does mean he is willing to spend money, the question becomes how much money. If it's 1 million, that doesnt do anything for us and limits us.
