Per Jeff Passan, Twins hitting coach James Rowson is replacing Tim Wallach as bench coach and will also be "offensive coordinator." He was Twins hitting coach for two years after spending time in the minors as a player with the Yankees and Mariners. He had also been Yankees minor league hitting coordinator for a number of years.

Yes veryyyyy early since Mattingly will survive 2020 but Rowson,Hillman,Keith Johnson(if around) will likely become the new manager by 2021 with Rowson the new fave. They were looking for a bench coach to "groom" some thought it would be Eric Duncan but turned out its this guy

The curious case of Jarlin Garcia. Does anyone remember that Jarlin started four games through April early May in 2018? The outcome was 23 innings and just two earned runs.
In his next two starts, Garcia was tagged for three homers in each, and his career as a starter was over. Just like that.
My question is why? Given the especially high value placed on LH starting pitching, why did the Marlins pull the plug so quickly? For one, I would love to see the Marlins take a look at him as a starter once again. Garcia allowed just four homers in 50+ innings this season. On the other hand, lefty starter Caleb Smith allowed 33 HR in 150 innings.Last edited by Lee Stone; 10-27-2019, 09:26 AM.

Simply put, he's been very up and down the last couple of years. He wasn't very good in September, but overall had a good season, but I'm not exactly going to be penciling him into the bullpen let alone the rotation for the next couple of years.

However, pigeon-holing a still-developing pitcher like Garcia as a reliever seems short-sighted to me. Perhaps management has their reasons.

Also had the 22nd best FIP last year of all lefty RP, 20 IP minimum. He's a perfectly fine 2nd/3rd bullpen lefty on a good team and is going to make under $5 million (combined) next 4 years (assuming no major saves or huge break out), each year not being guaranteed which is fantastic. He's a pretty solid RP and there is no reason to tinker with him like Lee is suggesting, because there are at least a dozen SP options above him on the pecking order. I know you know this, but stating so Lee can see it's him against the world with things like this.
Perfect world, Vesia continues to be awesome and put on the 40 man Aug 1, one of Stewart/Castano/D. Lee/Quijada looks like a good 3rd bullpen lefty at minimum, and one of Conley/Ca. Smith/Rogers projects as an elite reliever (*I know the later two this isn't a "perfect world," but I can see a RP conversion coming this summer not because they suck, but because the team needs them there as other SP are better (Sixto, Sandy, Pablo, Neidert, Cabrera, Garrett). In this scenario, they can move Garcia with 3+ years of control which would be great.
If it ain't broken, don't fix it. Garcia isn't a top 15 issue on the 25 man roster.

But u got Garcia/Quijada/Conley/Lee/Castano/Probably 2 or 3 older guys in AAA/Stewart right now
Plus its not like they dont have a 12 deep SP order and money to spend on a vet arm if they want

If Miami wants a LHB who can play 1B/Corners this guy is coming on the market
Japanese outfielder/first baseman Yoshitomo Tsutsugo will be posted in November.
Nippon Professional Baseball's Yokohama DeNA BayStars already announced their intention for Tsutsugo to be posted, but now we know the timing involved. The 27-year-old has been one of the best hitters in Japan for a few years now, boasting an impressive mix of power and patience from the left side. He hit .272/.388/.511 with 29 homers over 131 games this season. He has experience between left field and both corner infield positions. Passan throws out a comp to Cubs' slugger Kyle Schwarber.
I would pass but its an option

They need a veteran right handed slugger.

Not surprisingly, the Marlins are declining Castro's $16 milllion option according to Jon Heyman. Barry Jackson says that there might be some interest in bringing him back on a deal at less money, but that Castro isn't a priority for the team early in free agency.
Also, on his latest podcast, Craig Mish says that he's heard that they plan on spending money this offseason. He said that they aren't looking at big, long-term deals, but certainly more than last year's Granderson/Walker type deals. He says they'll be looking for 1-2 year deals in the $8-10 million range. He mentioned they'll be looking for bullpen help but may have to look for trades to get bats since there isn't too much available on the free agent market. He gave Kole Calhoun as an example of a bat that could be available.

It makes sense for baseball reasons as a year of evaluation of Lewin//Isan/jazz/Bleday/Monte/Sanchez/SP makes sense, but dear god what’s the plan for building fan confidence and negotiating the TV deal. Naming rights?
I still think the owe it to everyone to do better

Barry Jackson has a new column and it seems like the Marlins know they need to improve the MLB product.

According to multiple sources, the Marlins want to add at least two relievers in free agency and at least one starting position player, likely an outfielder or first baseman, and potentially two. (Third base options will be considered with the understanding that Brian Anderson can play right field if needed.) A starting pitcher might be added if Urena is no-tendered.
