Minimizing Garcia seems just plain wrong. His numbers across the board were better than Romo's - and he got us Lewin Diaz (along with Vallimont). His WHIP, which is what really matters when you get down to it, was better than Nick Anderson's ... who turned into a top 100 prospect (along with Richards). The 27-year-old version of Jarlin the Marlin was very, very good. His performance for the Giants will utlmately settle the discussion.

I mean, what is Matt Joyce's role on this team? My guess would be he'll be the main pinch-hitting option, but in a year where we almost certainly won't win more than 70-games, who gives an F about that role? He's just taking ABs away from the likes of Garrett Cooper, John Berti and Harold Ramirez. All guys who you could make strong arguments could be long-term bench pieces going forward. You could not make that argument for 35-year old Matt Joyce. Need I remind you that Chad Wallach is still on the 40-man roster? The excuse that Wallach's veteran presence is needed at AAA to handle our young pitchers is a load of crap. For one, the guy would definitely clear waivers, but even if he didn't, 30-35 year old veteran catchers who are good hands but are still in AAA because they can't hit are a dime a dozen. Tons of those guys will be available after spring training after they don't make teams after they get invited to spring training. Garcia was 27 cheap, and established himself at least to be a guy who will stick on a 25-man roster as the 6th-7th guy out of the bullpen. Quijada has his issues, but still just 24, still developing, he could've turned a corner at AAA this year, worth giving him a chance to do that at least, that's what LAA will do with him this year. Maybe they just got overconfident in their abilities to be able to find a deal after the rabbit they pulled out of the hat with Dean.
I'd absolutely rather have Garcia and Quijada versus Joyce and Wallach. Give this PA to Cooper, Berti, Ramirez, and Sierra. That could legitimately be your bench next year.

Eric Longenhagen of Fangraphs on: Magneuris Sierra, CF, Miami Marlins
I was way too high on Sierra when he was a prospect. He can absolutely fly, and I thought he’d be a Gold Glove-caliber center field defender who made an above-average rate of contact, perhaps enough that he’d slash and dash his way into a leadoff role. Miami tried to hit the reset button by demoting him to Double-A for the start of 2019, and he hit well there for a month and a half before coming back to Earth at Triple-A throughout the rest of the summer. The underlying contact data here is bad, the exit velos are toward the bottom of the scale, and Sierra’s poor defensive instincts subvert his speed, making him an only average defender because of it. He looks like an org guy now.

Looks like MilB guys are starting to come off the board which sucks for us since we wanted some of them

Marlins are giving NRI Matt Kemp reps at First Base this Spring. This is new, so we will see if it carries over to the exhibition season. He and many of the other position players have reported for early work. Pitchers & Catchers first workout is today at 1.
They trying to get Kemp in that backup corners/1B job

If Matt kemp can play a decent 1b that could be pretty interesting. They have so many bodies in spring training it’s going to be interesting to see how 3b, all 3 outfield spots, and 1b all pan out. So many different combination possibilities

This seems fair. He has the talent and tools to become a piece for a team but doesn’t seem to know how to utilize the talent. For his speed he should be a much more effective base stealer and be better defensively
They are dying for Kemp to hit some HR's in ST and pretty much make the rosterLast edited by tjfla; 02-12-2020, 10:05 AM.

Alfaro, Cervelli (Wallach)
Aguilar, Cooper
Isan
Rojas, Berti
Anderson
Dickerson
Villar, Sierra (Brinson)
Ramirez, Joyce
AAA - Jazz, Sanchez, Monte, Lewin
You're basically saying Kemp replaces Sierra, and Villar/Berti/Ramirez handle CF. Sierra is straight DFA'd. Or, you're trading/cutting Cooper or Aguilar(which then cost you $750k). DFA'ing Wallach also doesn't help, as then you still have to DFA Sierra off the 25 man.
This doesn't make sense to me as the result is you are going to lose one of Aguilar, Cooper, Sierra, or Brinson, and don't you hope one of them work out besides whatever Kemp is going to do?

They already did this with Joyce, and they effectively lost Garcia for it.
I'd rather have Garcia and any of Aguilar, Cooper, Sierra, or Brinson, versus Joyce and Kemp?
Trying for longterm assets is a good thing?

Remember Sharp could be 60 Day as well if a spot is needed and guys like Brinson/Cooper/Harold do have options
All I am saying is they would love to see Kemp show some power in ST and would add him to 40 man if he did. If he is hitting .134 with no HR in ST then he aint making nothing but if hes hitting .280 with 3 or 4HR very different story. Dont forget 2 years ago he was an All Star with 20+HR Remember Cervelli also might see some 1B repsLast edited by tjfla; 02-12-2020, 10:38 AM.

Fangraphs Top 120 for 2020
https://blogs.fangraphs.com/2020-top-100-prospects/
7 Marlins on the list. Jazz at the top. Lewin came in at 119.
Sixto dropped again but at this point I’m like, meh, these numbers are very subjective beyond the Wander Franco’s (80 FV!!!!!!) of the world.Last edited by Namaste; 02-12-2020, 11:13 AM.
