There are more pressing needs than SS. If you can upgrade there, sure, but let's not pretend it's a black hole like CF and C are.

The Marlins made their big offseason move acquiring Louis Head from the Rays for PTBNL or cash. Brian Miller was DFAd to make room on the roster.

RHP relievers are not a need on this team though. Which makes me think, some RHP relievers are going to be leaving shortly for bats. Hell maybe even Floro (best year, 2 years of control... probably never more valuable than right now) is on the block. I can totally live with Bender, Thompson, Pop, pick one of Sixto/Cabrera/Elisier, and Head as your 5 bullpen right handers to open the season (assuming you sign a legitimate veteran lefty, and keep Bleier and Okert). That's still a good pen on paper, especially behind Sandy, Rogers, Pablo/FA, Luzardo, and Sixto/Cabrera/Elisier. You can deal with things in June/July if you need a reliever, especially if you're banking on Meyer being a reliever second half of the year.
Anyways. This move is fine. Hopefully this makes clear sense when arms are shot out for bats.

Jays just signed Berrios to 7/$131 - that's roughly valuing him as a $20/year player through his prime. He is pretty similar to Sandy as a comp. Sort of. Berrios is "1" year from free agency so Jays had no leverage and paid full price here. Marlins thankfully have 3 years before Sandy gets there, and Sandy has made no "real" money to date.
This tracks pretty well for something like a 4/$35 (+ options), 5/$50, 6/$67.5, or 7/$90 kind of deal.
This one is so easy. 5/$50 and let's move on. Sandy gets the fuck you money for his life, and preserves a massive 2nd contract when he is 31 and still in his prime. Marlins get 2 free agent years and cost certainty.
Also, Jays could probably use some cheap controlled pitching right now.

A guy can always choose to bet on himself, but I think that is insane for a pitcher if the club is willing to pay him $50m bucks 3 years from free agency. Sandy's 2025 pay day may never come. Carpe diem.

Marcus Thames is the new hitting coach for the Marlins, per Craig Mish. Former teammate of Jeter's and was Yankees hitting coach '18-'21. The major league staff is also expected to include Al Pedrique, the AAA manager of Jacksonville in '21, as 3B/INF coach at the majors level, per Daniel Alvarez.

mish saying we will at least be calling the twins to get buxton. They need to go all in and give whatever it will take prospect wise to do it for him and Garver. There is no superstar talent like Buxton you can get for what it will take to sign him long term. The injury risk and 1 year to free agency will make it not astronomical and the risk is well worth it. His WAR in the amount of games he's played is beyond ridiculous. If he figures out the injury issues and learns to play more in control and not run full speed into walls on a weekly basis he will be a huge steal and we will still have more than enough SP left over.

So there were some moving parts coaching wise.
Marcus Thames will be the hitting coach.
Edwar Gonzalez (existing minor league hitting coordinator) will be the assistant hitting coach.
Al Pederique is third base/infield coach
Eric Duncan (who has been the hitting coach) will now be "quality assurance coach"

Personally, I'd be all for this. Yes, the injury risk is significant with Buxton, but you're taking on risk with whoever you trade for unless you completely gut the farm system and some of the big club, which defeats the purpose. You're not going to get the chance to trade for Juan Soto or Ronald Acuna. But give me a guy that is in their league, but comes with injury questions over paying a similar price for someone you're going to have to gamble on them developing into a good player like a Brandon Marsh. Not that I'd be against trading for Marsh, but I'd much rather a guy who you don't have to hope he defies the odds to become that good if I have the chance. The deal would have to come with an extension, though, for me.
