He just had no business pitching 2 innings.
ya, i like relievers who even if they dont strike a million guys out dont walk a ton of people and dont pitch to contact. thats not rocket science. and its especially not a good idea to give any non star reliever who pitches to contact a multi year deal with significant money given relievers volatility overall and especially when you purposely are pitching to contact on top of already being volatile.

    • Mattingly's use of the bullpen continues to be confusing. Ziegler shouldn't be going more than an inning we all know that. Meanwhile O'Grady only goes one inning yesterday for some reason forcing Despaigne to be used. Long relief is hos role. Then today O'Grady ready in the pen for the tenth and he's not used.

Yes, this loss is on the manager. Four innings out of Despaigne was a windfall. Trying for a fifth was reckless. Expecting him to go through the Cubs order a third time wasn't realistic. Going with Ziegler while Barraclough was available was like running up a white flag - entering a gunfight with a slingshot. Yes, Ziegler retired the side in the ninth, but he gave up two rockets that happened to be right at Rojas and Castro. Running him out there for the tenth - again with Barraclough as an option - defied logic. Wins will be tough to come by this season so you have to go all out to win the close ones. Note on Turner: I think he's gone when Straily returns, but he showed me something in his second inning. After going with only fastballs and hard sliders in his first inning, he switched to more offspeed stuff in the second. That really worked for him. Offspeed also worked for Tazawa. As we remember, he rarely got in hitters' heads with slow stuff last year.

          • The confusing decisions keep going

Ellington DFA and they add Severino Gonzalez(again????). Braxton Lee to Nola

Wouldn't be surprising if we lose Ellington. Teams love a guy who throws 100 and he has options. How the hell has James Needy kept his 40 man spot is the bigger question

            • Looking forward to Richards tomorrow vs. Red Sox. Hoping for six or seven solid innings from Peters today.

Looking forward to seeing who they DFA to call Richards up

Mattingly has made some very stupid bullpen decisions. Keeps trying to extend guys who can't go beyond 1 inning

Needy was quite decent at A+/AA last year. A lot better than Elieser Hernandez for example. Not saying I care whether Needy goes, but another team would definitely grab him.

As a 26 yr old. He is solid minor league depth but no reason he should be on 40 man.

U are right Needy as a 26 yr old who looked good in AA 3 years ago looked ALOT better than 22 yr old Elieser Hernandez in High A ball LY. U should have seen how good I looked at 18 when I was pitching to the Junior League All Stars made up of 14 yr olds.

                    • Bour sits today vs. Quintana. Seeing how Justin hasn't squared up a single pitch thus far, that's probably a good idea. Maybe he'll come up big as a PH. The over/under on Wallach whiffs today is 2. I think the traffic light will turn green for Anderson as soon as he hits his first major league homer.

                      • Ellington's a guy I could see blowing up with another team. This seems like Mike Hill business as usual.

I've always wanted to believe in Ellington. At 27, however, he's just not the pitcher he was at 24. Walks were always an issue. I don't blame the team for tossing in the towel.

Had alot of interest at trade deadline from teams. He might make it thru because of injury but wouldn't be a surprise if we traded him for something because 2 or 3 teams put in DFA.

Tyler Kinley(who is with Twins right now) is Ellington with worse command so possible we get him back eventually?

Be interesting who they DFA after the game with Richards up

                            • If I remember correctly Bour started last season really really slow too. Through the first 15 games he had a .167 BA, .315 SLG and only 2HR in 54 AB. So give him some time.

                              • Spotlight on Dillon Peters. He'll be under a microscope due to command issues last September and this spring. If he stays on top of the curve and moves the fastball around, he'll be good vs. Cubs. Remember, 1.50 ERA in three home starts last September. First pitch strikes are essential for him

He'll get all the time in the world. He's vital part of lineup.
