Unfortunately they likely wouldnt have interest in Soler.
A pie in the sky scenario may be something like H. Davis (FV55 C and behind E. Rodriguez as a prospect arguably), Triolo (FV45 3B/play everywhere), and kick the tires on Nick Gonzalez finding his draft status (FV40 2B). This is effectively the same value as say..... Eder, Fulton, Miller/Millbrandt/S. Reynolds, Mack/R. Hernandez, and throw them in Sixto or Nasim/I. Lewis for boom or bust upside. It would be solidifying catcher forever on paper and getting two more Edwards/Amaya/Groshans types basically.
Nothing like that could happen during the season unless everyone falls out, but the Pirates could easily run with this:
E. Rodriguez (FV55), _____
____
Peguero (FV45+), Bae
Cruz, _____
K. Hayes, D. Lopez (FV40)
Suwinski, C. Joe
Reynolds
_____
Keller, Brubaker (injured), and have a lot of interesting SP arms with Contreras, Eder, Ortiz, Preister, Fulton, and old friend K. Nicolas
And Bednar leading a young bullpen that has a few good arms past him.
They'd have a lot of open money to spend to get a 1B, RF/DH, and a platoon SS (as Cruz may play some OF) + maybe a luxury SP upgrades. I think that's a good idea for them as C, SS, 3B, and CF have start upside in their lineup here.
Marlins on paper could at least have this pretty quickly
Davis (FV55), Fortes
Arraez
Segura, N. Gonzalez (FV40) <--- Watson eventually replacing Segura
______, Amaya (FV45)
Triolo < --- Cappe eventually replacing
DLC
Jazz, Edwards
J. Sanchez, Garcia
Sandy, Eury, Cabrera, Rogers, Luzardo, Garrett, and Cueto, with Meyer and Monteverde(!) in the wings with a ton of FV40 relievers.
There would be room here for a 3rd SP trade easily + money for a luxury upgrade anywhere, and looking hard at you Garcia here.
Imagine they Luzardo for Peraza is the core deal and Soler is kept:
Davis, Fortes
Arraez
Segura, N. Gonzalez <--- Watson eventually replacing Segura
Peraza, Amaya
Triolo < --- Cappe eventually pushing elsewhere. Survival of the fittest.
DLC
Jazz, Edwards
J. Sanchez, Soler
Sandy, Eury, Cabrera, Rogers, Garrett, Cueto
Meyer, Bender, Chargois, and they have seven FV40 RHP reliever types according to Fangraphs, and doesn't include Soriano and others
Puk, Nardi, Monteverde
Keep Meyer and Monteverde has 2-3 IP guys to stretch out quickly as needed for SP7 and 8. Marlins would have thinned out their SP depth big time moving 3 names, but adding two FV55, one FV45, and one FV40 bat to the immediate lineup + Edwards and Amaya each as FV45s on their own, is a pretty quick young talent infusion here.
Basically, endless hypotheticals to make this work for all teams and they have the juice. We'll see what happens. Practically, I will keep saying they should probably trade for Moncada/T. Anderson sort of thing as the White Sox suck and those guys make a lot of sense to go for it now.

Hopefully they just add to the team so they are contending.

They did low-ball him, but they weren't wrong to do that. If we're upset, they low-balled the low ball. Big picture, the won the Luzardo trade as well as not signing him and having another Garcia on the books. I've always been OK with this one and thankfully it worked out.

just add tim anderson and grandal. give them stallings and wendle to offset some of the money and figure out whatever group of prospects would work for them. It makes sense for both teams. White sox are in need of an overhaul, anderson has 1 year left, grandal is a FA to be, they arent contending this year, and they could use some prospects. Pipeline had them 26th in the rankings coming into the year. give them some pitching to let them rebuild around Andrus.
Not sure what it would take, but give them Eder/Fulton/Mack? or other guys. There is a deal that makes sense for both sides.
Could trot out a lineup of:
Arraez
Anderson
Jazz
Soler
DLC
Grandal
Segura
Sanchez
Cooper/Gurriel

Anyway, yes, we should be adding before we collapse.

It's a miracle that we avoided extending Marte. Had we done so, we'd be reveling in his 73 OPS right now. Instead we have a very helpful pitcher in Luzardo. (By the way, the Mets are paying Marte $20 million a year for four years! As I recall, most of this board's contributors were very much into keeping and paying Marte.)Last edited by Lee Stone; 06-01-2023, 11:04 AM.

On Marte:
1. Marte was great last year, and had been great for 4 straight years.
2. Everyone agrees we did great getting Luzardo, even at the time it was considered a smart move.
3. The Mets spent too much on Marte
4. Rumors were we could've gotten an extension done for much less than what the Mets ended up giving him.
5. Like fish16 mentioned, I'm not sticking a fork in Marte after 2 bad months at 34 years old.

Lee is right here. I think everyone became too infatuated with Marte just because he was the first real star they had for awhile post the Yelich moves. It became emotional with him as things are so bad for this franchise, he became a glimmer of hope with the unexpected covid year and Marte was objectively awesome for the time here. In hindsight, the Marlins were perfect with Marte and we should credit them for that even with a footnote that the 3/$40 or whatever is pretty obnoxious for what he was doing at the time. You get rid of guys 1 year too early always as the 2 years late always kills you. He's a 2 years late guy for sure, and the only thing saving the Mets here is Steve Cohen has a lot of money.

It happens with these guys. He became an old 34 year old. I figured they'd get at least 2 years out of him, but the decline is happening faster. He's cooked. The Marlins should have probably offered him a little more on a 3 year deal as the lowball 3/$40 or whatever was reported was really pathetic, but he's exactly the older guy you don't sign for a ton of money. Look at Segura. He is looking pretty scary too, but at least it's not the Marte money.

jorge alfaro just opted out of his deal with the red sox. Please cut stallings loose and bring him back. We desperately need more offense from the C spot. In AAA this year he is hitting .320 with an .886 OPS. Still allergic to walks but not K'ing as much as he once was. He would sadly be a pretty big upgrade at this point.
