  • Yan gomes really seems like the type of guy they would go after for the catching upgrade. 6 million this year, club option for 6 million next year. Having a really nice year. he's older but he's always graded out terrific defensively and he's not a great hitter but he is a big improvement over stallings. He wouldnt cost much. Maybe some lower level guys. Seems like the more likely option than Grandal or Perez. Improvement in the margins.

He and giovanny gallegos from the cardinals wouldnt be the splashy deadline but i think that really helps the team. I really think they need to add 1 more righty set up man for the bullpen and gallegos is great.

    • Watching Rangers vs. Angels and Chad Wallach just homered - somehow his sixth of the year. Can’t believe he’s still in the majors. Or that he might actually be an upgrade on at least one of our current catchers.

Sandy Leon was getting a lot of playing time for the Rangers. Although I think he was just DFA'd.

        • after barely playing pretty much since 2019, Jose devers is having a nice year in AA. He is somehow still only 23 until December.

Sandy Leon sticking around in baseball as long as he has given how completely awful he is is remarkable. 6 straight years of sub .550 OPS and still getting chances is nuts. He turned a single good year in boston in 2016 into a career. Outside of that year he has never had an OPS above .548 or an average above .192 outside of 2017 where he hit .225 with an OPS of .644.

Nunez hit an opposite field homer yesterday. Has to get the average up though.

great to see. he had 2 career homers coming into the year and has 4 already so that's good. The weird thing with him was i thought the whole premise of his game was having this amazing glove, but when i saw BA's grades on him yesterday the fielding grade wasnt as high as i would have thought. They had his fielding at 55, arm at 60, and speed at 70.

From what I've seen from him I agree with FanGraph's take on his defense.

Basically he tries to do too much sometimes so is prone to errors. If he cleans it up he goes from very good, to great defensive shortstop.

I still find this the most interesting angle for him - hitting right handers:

                      2023
                      vs LHP .505 OPS
                      vs RHP 181 PA, .253/.393/.370 (.763), 35/43 BB/K, 4 HR
                      Overall 28/31 SB

2022 Beloit (only splits MiLB.com has)
                      vs LHP .636 OPS
                      vs RHP 272 PA, .253/.407/.336 (.743 OPS), 55/74 BB/K, 2 HR

There is a 2021 split also with a .675 OPS vs RHP in Jupiter over 180 PA.

This is a big sample where he is consistently hitting right handers enough. In 2022, IKF had the 30th best OPS of all SS - .261/.314/.327 (minimum 150 PA).

Nasim pops even a .625 OPS vs RHP with the defense and base running and the Marlins are in serious business with Amaya being able to hit lefties. With guys like Mateo (2.7 WAR 2022), Lopez (6 WAR 2021), and Edman (5.7 WAR 2022) all in this .650-.725 OPS range here with defense and base running, it will get exciting extremely fast if Nunez is a .650 OPS bat against right handers and Amaya over .700 versus left handers. Might be some awesome production here over call it 1,000 PA as a SS platoon and days off rest of infield.

Hopefully the bottom doesn't drop out for Nasim, but his overall AA stats are genuinely insane. It's like 450 PA hitting .245/.365/.320 (.315 BABIP) with 15% BB/21% K, 50/58 SB rate. I eyeballed those slash numbers to note but its close.

                      • This team not being bad despite Sandy being bad is not something I could’ve predicted at all.

Our new number 5 starter, once again, can’t pitch with a lead tonight.

This is the first start I've really felt a lack of confidence. He's terrible.
