Infielder Sean Rodriguez and the Miami Marlins are in agreement on a minor league deal, a source tells ESPN. Rodriguez, 34, played every position last year for the Phillies except catcher -- and even had 1.1 scoreless innings as a pitcher. Good potential fit as a utility guy.

      • Can't say I see the need for him, but it's a minor league deal so whatever.

Same. With Berti on the team, I don't see much of a need, but he could provide solid depth.

          • The Wind Surge have to field a team. Maybe 3B for Rodriguez.

              He hits lefties (historically).

He's good platoon guy for that. It makes me think someone is on the way out as he makes sense with Joyce for a platoon, and offers more positional versatility.

This may be where TJ says they are shopping Cooper.

              • Astros have made an offer to Hunter Pence. The 37-year-old absolutely clobbered the ball in 318 PA for Texas last year. He had a higher OPS than any Marlin.

With a crazy swing and wacky throwing motion, he's a favorite with the crowd (and also teammates). Paired with Joyce in RF or Dickerson in LF, he could help ticket sales, not to mention the team offense.

                • Yes Jose Fernandez and Giancarlo Stanton couldn't get people to come to the ballpark, but Hunter Pence is the draw that will bring people back.

                  • He's entertaining. And, hey, many on this forum wanted the Marlins to ante up for Castellanos or Puig ... Pence was a better bat than either of them last season (OPS).

Him having half the ABs of those guys is irrelevant, because he would've just maintained his OPS for the entire season, because that is how baseball works, correct?

                      • An optimist sees the doughnut, a pessimist sees the hole! In a platoon situation, he'd be great.

WTF does this mean? How does this relate to your thoughts on Isan Diaz?

My thoughts on Diaz are that he had a 51 OPS last season. Pence had 124. If the Marlins are going to lose fewer games this season, they will need some productive bats.

What do you attribute to Pence being just as bad as Diaz was in 2018 with the bat, and then great in 2019? If we had talked to you at this time a year ago. Hunter Pence would be the biggest bum in the entire major leagues to you. Could it be that there's more to player evaluation than purely what they've done in their last 200 ABs?
