I'm calling bullshit on the janitor on this one. We'll see.

With all indications that Marlins brass wants Villar to take the CF job that opens up RF to everybody and Cooper seems to make the most sense to get the lion's share of ABs out there if that's the case. Although Harold Ramirez, the seemingly forgotten man, should be a factor out there as well.

Playing Joyce consistently over Cooper/Ramirez would be so dumb.

Agree. I can see Joyce getting 2 starts a week against good RHP, but unless Cooper or Harold are hurt, there is no reason he should get more than 200-300 at bats this year.

      • One thing that Mish mentions on his podcast yesterday was that when Mike Hill and the new FO was trading Yelich, Stanton, Ozuna they didn't have any scouting reports for any teams since that was the way Loria did business. Pretty much doing the deals in the dark or with pretty much what they could get in 2 months. The best deal they made was the Smith/Cooper which they had the info from the NYY org.

        • Joyce isnt playing against LHP but is penciled in as the RF vs RHP which is what we see usually

Wouldnt be surprised to see Harold getting alot of AB's out in RF

No janitor info here just alot of talk around back fields

Villar can also move over to RF later in game and u put Sierra/Brinson/Berti in CF for defense if needed

The Matt Joyce signing surprised/perplexed me a little. He's a reasonable pinch hit bat, but wouldn't Eddy Alvarez be a better choice? He can play everywhere and switch hits well. He could also pinch run.

Alvarez might not even start in AAA.

              2B-Kotah/Lopes
              SS-Jazz

Matt Joyce is a fine bench player for a contending team. He doesn't make a lot of sense for what we're trying to do this year. To me he just strikes me as another Curtis Granderson, Neil Walker and Cameron Maybin, veteran bats that get way more ABs with us than any other team would give them and I thought we were past these types of signings at this point. Matt Kemp falls into this category as well.

I just listened to this, look I like Mish, but this came off to me as a lot of excuse-making on Mike Hill's behalf.

                      Are you Eddy’s dad?

I don’t understand why people are against having Joyce on the team. He’s a good hitter especially against RHP. Could have some value at the deadline. I don’t think he’s blocking anybody special from playing time.

If that's the case, that's on Hill. You set up the system anyway.

That said, I get not doing something if your boss won't use it - I have that situation at work - I've learned certain things can be pushed off and won't ever be used, so I don't bother doing it. Not right/ideal, but it happens after that situation occurs so often.

Just a fan. My own son was the losing pitcher in the very first sanctioned high school baseball game ever played in the State of Alaska in about 1990. I coached a boy in Juniors (13-14) who became the first Alaskan to ever reach the major leagues. His name is Chad Bentz, a lefty pitcher who was missing most of his right hand and performed like Jim Abbot. He was actually with the Marlins for a cup of coffee. Also a sports columnist at the time, I wrote a story
for the Juneau Empire when Chad was 13, entitled Just Another Natural. In it, I actually predicted that he would become Alaska's first Major Leaguer.

Our future 1B and Corner OF look to be Lewin Diaz, Jesus Sanchez and JJ Bleday, all left-handed bats. Seems like Harold Ramirez and Garrett Cooper would be very nice right-handed counterparts to have on the bench. As far as getting something for Joyce at the deadline, we've just been so unsuccessful with getting anything for veteran players the last couple of years, I don't have a lot of confidence in being able to get anything of note for these types of guys. (Think about what we've gotten for this list of guys, it's almost nothing: Justin Bour, Derek Dietrich, Starlin Castro, Cameron Maybin, Martin Prado, Curtis Granderson, Neil Walker, Dan Straily, Nick Wittgren) The only vet we've gotten anything of note from is Sergio Romo and even with that one, we had to deal a solid prospect with him to get what we wanted.

Just a flier here, but I'll predict Peyton Burdick starts in Jupiter this season and reaches Jacksonville by June/July. I further see him as a regular in the 2021 Marlin OF at some point. Simply a gut feeling.

I’d argue the best deal they made was the ozuna deal. They turned a merely above average oitfielder into sandy alcantara and jazz. The Yankees trade was pretty obvious to the eye going to be a win for us because it was what teams will start doing to us in the next year or two and that is take advantage of 40 man roster crunches

No on vilified you because you thought brinson was a bust, you were vilified and deservingly so because you quite literally did it within the first series he played against the cubs in e beginning of 2018. Literally two games. That doesn’t make you a visionary, that makes you so incredibly cynical in every aspect of this team that it turned out to be right eventually
