50 games seems incredibly stupid in a sport like baseball. from our perspective id rather no season than 50 games and the chance of us using up a service year for a prospect. these owners are cheap as shit and i dont want to hear any of their bullshit about crying poor. nything less than 75-81 games seems stupid in baseball. from a pitchers perspective why would you risk it to get ready for what might be 10 starts max

this has somehow been simultaneously the quickest but longest 2.5-3 months since the season was suspended. seems like just yesterday we were playing a thursday spring training game in front of a crowd despite every other major sport suspending operations while at the same time that seems like 5 years ago. i miss normalcy

Apparently the league is considering an expanded Arizona Fall League and potentially creating a Florida Fall League.

that's gonna be big with the loss of a minor league year if it can be done safely. im very interested to see both how teams handle the minor league guys this year and to start next year as well as what can/will be done to make this seemingly inevitable loss of an entire minor league year be less destructive for the future. this really sucks from the perspective of a rebuilding team like us.

The one thing about a 50 game season is it gives a real chance a parity. Lesser teams can get hot, and that could put them into a position to have a shot at the playoffs. In a 162 game season, eventually things tend to even out. In 50 games, that might not happen. I also wonder how something like that might change the strategy of some teams. Would you see teams use 4 man rotations, with a 5th guy who just starts on certain stretches of games? Would teams carry more relievers and less position players? While I'd still rather at least 80 games, a one year situation where things look very different might not be so bad. You'd also have way more teams in the hunt for the playoffs at whatever trade deadline they set, so that should make the trade deadline a seller's market, and allow Miami to get some value for some of their hired guns.

Like been mentioned they want to do a AFL and FFL. Every ML team has 2 teams(1 team is AAA/AA/A guys and 1 team is A/Draft Picks/Rookie Guys) They play at ST complex and the upper level team might be playing at FSL stadiums with those guys likely being able to be called up to ML team

If MLB plays this year this is pretty much 100% to happen from like Sept to Nov

Marlins better be ALL over this if it happens!! Sign 2 or 3 big name players and have 3 of Top 40 Picks

It all comes back to the same place. MLB keeps making the same offer in different forms.

Looks to me like owners have settled on about a 50-game season to be played in Aug and Sept. That's the only way players are going to get their full prorata salary - which they would claim as a victory of sorts. Sounds fine to me. Play ball.

in no way shape or form would the players declare that a victory. the owners are being cheap as hell. they get to rake in the profits when things are good, they can suck up the losses when they arent perfect. Or they can open their fucking books for once and prove how terrible this year will be for them.

This offer was within 10% of the same amount of money and many more games. it was essentially the owners saying fuck you we're offering about the same amount of money, you can decide how many games you want to play for that amount.

The Major League Baseball Players Association is preparing to send a counter-proposal to the league which will call for 89 games at prorated salaries and expanded playoffs, ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports (Twitter thread).

It’s 25 fewer games than the 114-game proposal the union last sent and 13 games more than MLB’s 76-game proposal on Monday. Of course, the league’s proposal only guaranteed players 50 percent of their prorated salaries — plus another 25 percent should a 16-team postseason be played to completion. As such, it’s hard to envision this deal being accepted — or even considered — by the league.

The new number of games does bring the midpoint between the two proposals to 82 games — the originally proposed number by the league. And ESPN’s Jesse Rogers reports that the union proposal contains expanded 16-team playoffs in both 2020 and 2021, which would surely hold appeal to ownership. The Athletic’s Evan Drellich adds that the players’ share of the playoff pool would be set at $50MM in the event that attendance is either limited or prohibited. Should fans be able to attend — unlikely in 2020 but plausible in 2021 — the players’ share would be dependent on gate revenue, as usual.

The players are also willing to commit to “broadcast enhancements” in the regular season and the playoffs, per Rogers, which would presumably lead to players regularly being mic’ed up to interact with the broadcast team during play. They’d also concede that non-high-risk players opting not to play during the COVID-19 pandemic (e.g. players who have family members at higher risk) would not receive salary or service time. High-risk players could opt not to play and still receive both.

Tonight’s proposal also contains several new elements. Bleacher Report’s Scott Miller tweets that an All-Star Game and Home Run Derby could be held after the World Series concludes — which could create further revenue for teams. The Wall Street Journal’s Jared Diamond, meanwhile, tweets that the union proposal seeks to establish a joint, $5MM fund with the league to support minor league players and drive social justice initiatives.
