Apparently we’ve talked to Roger McDowell about our pitching coach vacancy, per a somewhat confusing series of Tweets from Peter Gammons.

They took Bostick, Needy, Ortega, Cloyd, and Guerra off the 40 man. Not really surprised by any of that, but Bostick was a 50/50 guy for me. Ultimately not a big deal.

            Current projection.

I think they should DFA Prado, Rivera, and one of Meyer/Kinley/Guerrero/Graves/Hernandez to open up three spots for three bat improvements - two 1B/OF types and a better SS than Rivera. Then cut Holaday when they get a better catcher.

Past that, not much to do besides make changes as trades happen. I suspect they are going to try and buy low on camp invites to a ton of bats, as there is a clear path to making the team and guys will like that.

SP - Urena, Chen, Straily, Alcantara, Richards, Lopez, Ca. Smith (7)

RHP - Brigham, M. Gonzalez, Graves, Guerrero, Guzman, E. Hernandez, Meyer, T. Kinley, Steckenrider, Wittgren, Yamamoto (11)

LHP - Conley, Garcia, Peters, Quijada (4)

            C - Realmuto, Holaday (2)

IF - Anderson, Castro, Cooper, Diaz, Dietrich, O’Brien, Prado, Riddle, Rivera, Rojas, Schales (11)

OF -Brinson, Dean, Harrison, Lee, Sierra (5)

=40(But I'm still not sure if Guzman needs to be protected)

            Notable DFA/Rule 5 Exposure:
            P - O’Grady, Rucinski, Del Pozo, Poteet, J. Kinley
            C - Nola, Wallach, Telis
            IF - Twine
            OF - Galloway

We thought that last year, and then they signed Maybin and that was it.

Sure. I just expect them to do this basically. They really have no solution to those spots besides Holaday, Sierra/Lee, and Dean, and that's really terrible on opening day even for them.

                C - Realmuto, ______
                1B - O'Brien, Cooper
                2B - Castro
                SS - Rojas, Riddle
                3B - Anderson
                LF - Dietrich
                CF - Brinson, _______
                RF - _______

I actually don't hate that lineup if they get a solid veteran for RF and decent backups. That could be a 15-18 WAR position group easily (Realmuto 4+, Anderson and Castro 2.5+, the other 5 guys can probably get to 1+ WAR each). That's relatively middle of the pack and avoids some embarrassment. They were 9.9 this year with some epic negative numbers from reserve players.

Actually that's amazing. Mookie Betts out-WAR'd the Marlins.

I think we're good on pitching for next year aside from taking a flier on 2-3 relievers, but I think we really need to go hard after some veteran bats on 1 year deals or 1 year with option for 2nd year. It's what we should have done more of last offseason. Maybin was a good move. Id really be interested in what Daniel Murphy and Donaldson will command on a 1 year deal or if a team will be willing to go multiple years with them. Donaldson especially given his track record but down and injury plagued year. Also, if we sell off some arbitration eligible guys like Straily and Dietrich that can clear some money for some lineup additions.

Or if we keep Dietrich, I think him and a guy like Steve Pearce would be a phenomenal platoon at 1b, a position where we have almost nothing for next year essentially. Hell, even Curtis Granderson would be a nice addition just so that we dont have to rush the prospects. Thats the most important thing in my opinion, get quality veterans that you might be able to sell off at the deadline and prioritize the development of prospects for 2020/21.

Also please god just acquire anyone at SS for next year. I cant take Riddle or Rojas getting everyday AB's anymore. I wish they took my advice and went after Profar last year.

Completely agree. I think we need to go after 2 vets minimum for that lineup either at 1b/3b and a corner OF spot

You really think Murphy or Donaldson is an option here? Come on dude. Granderson is more like it, if he wants some playing time and to be a dad to the kids until the deadline. Two guys like that and a backup catcher upgrade makes sense. The SS needs to be the best AAAA guy they can get to keep in the minors as Castro, Rojas, and Riddle is a pretty locked middle infield depth chart to me.

You're also selling Rojas/Riddle short. Rojas averages out to a 1.75 WAR player over 600 PA the last two seasons combined. He's really fine as a 2nd/3rd tier starter, and is a premium bench player at minimum. Riddle slashed a .707 OPS vs RHP last year and is well above average defensively. There is some hope there as if he can get that up to even .750 vs RHP, he's looking like a good platoon starter with that defense. That's worth throwing them both out there for 2-3 months and seeing if they get lucky and turn into keepers or deadline trade assets. 2019 is going to be a pitching development year. The defense at SS will be helpful.

Haha absolutely not, just saying what I would be doing and the types of guys I would be looking at. Probably doesnt even make sense to spend that type of money for next year anyways. Thats probably more of a move for 2020 depending on how we develop next year.

Rojas and Riddle are just replacement level guys to me. Especially Riddle. I feel like that walk off he hit when he first came up has inflated peoples perception of him. Even against righties he's pretty below average. They are fine given that we arent trying to compete next year, but both of them are useless with the bat.

Hech was useless with the bat.

At least they seem to be able to hit a bit.

They are all useless with the bat. Both Rojas and Riddle have career OPS's around .650. I like both of their defense, just saying that they are fairly bad with the bat

Cashman came right out and said the Yankees are looking to move Sonny Gray. Isn't he sort of the exact guy we should be looking to acquire? I get that there's only 1 year of arb left but if you're the Yankees (who basically killed his trade value by saying they're going to move him) wouldn't you be interested in trading Gray for, say, Dietrich, who would replace Walker on the depth chart at 2B/3B and could also start vs. RHP at 1B instead of Bird or in LF? And if you're the Marlins, how do you pass up the chance to get an arm like that at such a low cost? Maybe I'm underestimating what Gray's return will be, but it seems to me if he were a FA this offseason he'd be the exact type of guy you'd target on a 1-year deal, then have the option of extending or trading at the deadline.

It's funny - I was just reading that and thinking the same thing. I think he'll cost a lot more than just Dietrich, though. But he could be a fantastic trade chip.

This factor is key (from MLBTR):

Nearly all of his struggles were confined to pitching at Yankee Stadium, where he turned in a ghastly 6.98 ERA and allowed 11 home runs in 59 1/3 innings. When pitching away from the Bronx, Gray logged a strong 3.17 ERA and yielded just three homers in 71 innings of work.
Imagine how his numbers would be with Marlins park as his home park.

We dont really have a need for more SP but im always in favor of acquiring talent when the value is at its lowest. Maybe something like Dietrich and Rojas for him considering they have a need at SS and maybe 2b now that Gregorius needs TJ surgery. Dietrich I think would be a good fit in yankee stadium.

Per @danconnolly2016 of The Athletic, the Orioles don't have as much international money as thought -- only $6mm as opposed to the previously reported figure of $6.7mm. Which would jive with my earlier story this week indicating Marlins have almost as much as O's.
Thats a pretty significant development. Man, if we lose him to the orioles at this point it would be hard to take. They are a mess pretty much throughout the entire organization from the players, the fact that they dont have a manager or front office, and their owner kind of sucks. As hard as it is to believe, they are also significantly behind us in their rebuild. I think 1 more trade for another million in IFA money will get it done for all 3 of the guys. They make us look like a well oiled machine in comparison.

Some Marlins 40-man roster cleaning: Outrighted today to NOLA: Tyler Cloyd, Javy Guerra, James Needy, Chris O'Grady, Christopher Bostick and Rafael Ortega. Current roster stands at 34.
Some long overdue 40 man roster purging today. Tyler Cloyd might have been the worst mlb pitcher ive ever seen for the marlins, which is impressive cause there has been a lot of shit coming out of our bullpen over the years.
