It's solely dependent on money bridging the gap to contending in 2021, or, they have 2023 circled and multiple more drafts and IFA periods are intended to supplant the team when the current MLB rookies are about to be free agents in a year or two. I just can't see how this is Plan A given they just got the team and need to build a fan base
The "plan" is have 100 million payroll and roster set by 2020 but like 2022/23 is when ready to compete. They aren't gonna be great in 2020/21 but they hope to have a base and build from there. Will have 3 of Top 46 Picks in this draft/5 million in IFA in 2019 then Top 3 Pick next year AND 6 million in IFA in 2020(which is first year we will be able to get guys who were NOT committed already)

Thats what I think too. Not great offer but gets u 3 MLB guys at 3B/C/RP for 2020 and likely 1 or 2 other prospects for depth. I wish we would have done something in Dec with Cincy instead of asking for Albies/Bellinger-could have got India/Barnhart/Downs/Comp A Pick and be done with this then

People are under impression that JT was bringing in Yelich trade however forget that Yelich came with 5 yrs and JT comes with 2. This is BIG reason why teams aren't paying up. Cincy and SD would likely raise offer if we gave them extension talks first and he committed but if JT told those teams HELL NO they would go from IN to Out quickly

Same they need to do something this week and get ready for ST!!!!

    • With Fan Fest on Saturday and the Wittgren deadline tomorrow, you have to think this wraps up fairly soon. I can't imagine that they want JT at Fan Fest answering questions about this and his future.

      • Keith Law's farm system rankings are out. He has the Marlins at 28 again. Not really surprising as Law has been harsher than most on the Marlins prospects (BA has them at 19 and Fangraphs had them at 20). This does reflect though that what the Marlins system needs the most is an elite prospect or 2.

I get not wanting to acquire JT via losing Bellinger. But put together a prospect offer the Marlins can’t refuse.
For whatever reason, under Friedman, they've been unwilling to move prospects for that "final" piece, and so far it's likely cost them a world series or two (they've traded lesser prospects for lesser guys, but haven't made that big move to acquire "that" piece).

This is where we all point to Bryce and Machado fiascos of non-signing holding this up, as if they go somewhere contending now, those teams are highly incentivized to get Realmuto and go for it immediately. Or Atlanta if they both end up on Nats/Phils respectively and they have to keep up/stay ahead.

Harper to the Dodgers would be amazing for the Marlins. Realmuto would be there in an hour.

Craziest thing is they already have to many OF without Harper and refuse to talk Bellinger or Verdugo. Miami wants to talk them while LAD/Friedman only wanna talk Joc Pederson like he is MVP type

              NYM/Houston already made the mistake

Law hates/doesn't care about Miami. Never has

System is #17-20 before JT trade and 2019 Draft. Should be Top 10 by end of year with tons of guys like to graduate in 2020

Guys who know Miami are Mish/Morosi/Feinsand and NONE of the rankings guys

Hate to admit it, but a team with Monte Harrison atop their prospect list and no positional talent in sight has to be damn close to the very bottom.

Good thing none of that is true. If you ignore VVM, Diaz, Scott, Osiris, Banfield, Miller, Pompey, and Devers on offense, along with Alcantara, Neidert, Guzman, Garret, Rogers, E. Cabrera, Gallen, and I guess Holloway and Yamamoto on the mound, they would absolutely be very close to, if not the, bottom.

This is not bottom 3. 28 is a lame ranking, but "20ish" is fair with no top end at the moment.

#Indians acquiring RH reliever Nick Wittgren from #Marlins for minor-league pitcher, sources tell The Athletic. Wittgren had been designated for assignment in surprise move to make room for Neil Walker. Good numbers last season - 2.94 ERA, .629 opponents’ OPS in 33 2/3 IP.

                      • They received 27 year old AAA RP Jordan Milbrath. Apparently a hard thrower. They got something but an odd move regardless. I’d rather have kept Wittgren. They also claimed Austin Brice back and DFA’d Galloway.

                        • We got a minor league reliever who is the same age as Wittgren and has worse stats in the minor leagues than Wittgren does in the majors.

                          Awesome.

                          • Is this a situation where we thought we had a Realmuto deal with Wittgren as part of it, DFA'd him in anticipation of that and that fell through so we were stuck getting what we could for him?

I’m assuming that this is the case given the return.

Can't imagine this as they just DFA'd Galloway for Brice back, so clearly they never valued Galloway (thankfully).

What's odd is, I have a good Indians friend and they are saying Wittgren has an option.

You can't tell me there are 22 better 40 man eligible pitchers in the Marlins organization today, including new guy and Brice.

                                This is a confusing one.
