Pretty much my feelings. Skip is fine. Hopefully they are able to retain Stottlemyre and overhaul the entire hitting staff.

Hiring the manager was the easy part. Now go add at least 3 bats to the lineup.

agree with this. we'll see how he actually manages in game. on the bright side it seems like cards fans are actually upset he's gone from there, but that's probably more to do with the fact that he was a fan favorite as a player there for a long time than anything he did as a coach.

I agree that the personnel and development sides are far more important, as well as opening up the wallet. And while we have no idea how good or bad this hire is, I think we can appreciate the process here. Kim Ng was handpicked by Jeter with no other candidates interviewed. This search however supposedly included at least 10 candidates who were interviewed, and 4 second interviews. It was a thorough process for an organization that hasn't done much of that in the past. Who knows whether it will pay off, and really, it only will if they get the other stuff right, but I think the process here is a positive sign.

i dont think they deserve credit for simply interviewing numerous candidates for a very important position without knowing the quality of those candidates. that should be the bare minimum. The guy who was the former manager of the mets who was one of the 4 finalists for instance was universally hated by mets fans for being such a terrible manager. simply interviewing a lot of candidates doesnt really mean much. we will see come april the impact skip has. Fantastic name for a manager though.

Maybe it should be the bare minimum, but it isn't. It hasn't been for them, and it's more thorough than a lot of teams.

Jon Morosi is reporting that the Marlins are hiring Oz Ocampo as assistant GM. This feels like a good hire.

Needs to be since the Miami Herald is reporting a "modest" increase from $80m. So let's throw out all these scenarios where they sign anything of impact. What's modest? $5m? Under $90m?

So this is roughly $74 million for the all internal team.... with three blank lines:

                Stallings, Fortes
                Cooper
                Jazz
                ______, Rojas/Wendle (other traded)
                Berti, Groshans/LeBlanc (other AAA)
Sanchez, DLC (it seems from post-season media they like them the best and Bleday will be shipped to AAA which does make sense)
                ______
                Garcia
                Soler

Sandy, Pablo, Cabrera, Luzardo, Rogers, Garrett
_____, Floro, E. Hernandez, Nance/Sixto/Neidert (other two in AAA)
                Scott, Bleier, Okert

                Trade - Rojas or Wendle
                Trade/DFA - Anderson, Sulser, Brigham

At best, this is probably like a 34+ WAR projection absent further mega-breakouts like Jazz/Rogers 2021 happening again/etc. Phillies had 43 WAR regular season last year. So they need 7+ WAR minimum to think they are a contender. Then pray. I don't know how you make this team work as you lose a ton of production if you move Pablo, and you'd have to hit on that trade and further prospect trades. This payroll is untenable.

It's just insane to think Correa ($33), Nimmo ($22), and E. Diaz ($15m), collectively 12.5+ WAR last year meaning the Marlins would enter the year as a top 5-8 team on paper without a doubt, could be dropped on this and the Marlins would match the Nationals payroll (20th overall). And then why not move mountains for Reynolds and Bednar (Meyer/Eder, Salas/Cappe/Watson, Berry, Sixto/Bleday) and you'd then be pushing $150m payroll and approaching the 18th overall Tigers payroll. That's effectively a 50 WAR team on paper. If you build it they will come. Sigh.

I’m going to be frustrated if Bruce lets Nimmo sign with the Rockies.

Lou, can we not have Elisier Hernandez on the team anymore? He had an ERA over 7 and OPS against over 1.000 as a reliever and ERA if almost 6(5.98) and OPS against of almost .900(.893) as a starter and his pitches all grade out as below average.

He is objectively not good and I don't know why you like him so much(and please don't post that fangraphs write up of him again, they are the ones who grade his stuff out as below average).

Sure, but think about how cheap they are and their belief in him. You are mistaking what I would do with what they probably do. I can see them tendering him due to their lack of other bullpen options, that's all. And if not, who cares.

So Fangraphs might like DLC now - https://fantasy.fangraphs.com/its-ne...2023-sleepers/

I'm skeptical because it's hard to reconcile his initial BABIP inflation, then was objectively a bottom 10 player in baseball for over half the season last year, and then caught fire, but his career line over 574 PA (1.7 WAR, .333 BABIP) is pretty solid and there are some underlying stats that support it (https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savan...-r-hitting-mlb). And that's with CF defense dragging him down as he plays up in LF. I suppose we can say, he hits the ball real hard so he should be conducive to "BABIP hot streaks" so that may explain the two major benders he's been on for his career and is starting to level out.

Mentioning as the organization is fairly analytical even if Don was not and can't see a scenario they don't open with Sanchez/Bleday and DLC as the LF platoon/4th OF (for less than $1.5m combined), and maybe if both of them keep hitting righties, Sanchez steals extra time in CF/RF against them. I'm OK with Berti and Soler being the backup OF with Bleday/Burdick a call up away.

Also a fantasy website, but an offseason prospect list as news is slow - https://www.fantrax.com/news/mlb/fan...yzxuvsl9pujo8x

A lot of variation here but I think it's interesting Jose Gerardo (https://www.fangraphs.com/players/jo...ts?position=OF) is the 7th and 9th top prospect here, ahead of Fulton, Groshans, Miller, and I. Lewis for both writers, and one of them has him ahead of Eder and Mack. Hopefully this is a compliment to this kid and not a negative on the others. Not sure I can buy this yet for a 17 year old, but it's something.

Apparently Mel has been retained on a multi-year deal, and is reportedly one of the highest paid pitching coaches now.
