Soler wasn’t my 1st choice, but he definitely an upgrade to the lineup that needed another power bat. It’s a clunky fit for now. I could see a Cooper or Aguilar trade being the next move, either in a deal for an actual CF or perhaps a late inning reliever. I would imagine that if the season started today, they’d rotate Sanchez and Garcia in CF.
Cooper and Aguilar are better baseball players than Soler.
No they aren't - maybe per dollar - but Soler was really awesome 2019/post-2021. Big upside. This is a fine move. Not bad, not great. It's fine. I appreciate them taking a swing upgrading the DH spot.
It means nothing without a CF which is the big issue. Get a CF.
In any event, Soler 2019/post-2021 is a super elite player. I don't know if they get that as there is certainly volatility, but he has produced. I'd take him over Aguilar, Cooper, or Rosario easily to hope you get 2019 again. Look at him post-all star break last year and overall BABIP.

That year is a pretty big outlier for his career, though, and he’s 30. I don’t hate the move on it’s surface, but I’m worried that this is it, or they decide they can now just add a glove first CF.

You are kind of doing what you accuse Lee of doing-which he admittedly does-and basing a lot on a small sample size. You even have to clarify "post season" of 21 because Soler had a negative WAR in 2021. He is a pretty mediocre player with one decent season and one decent post season.

Can the Marlins win more than 30 NL East games this year (if Soler is the last offensive piece)? If they don't, I can't see them winning more than 68 at best. to win 82 it would require them to win at least 52 of the 86 out-of-division games. That's not happening. 68-94 give or take 4

There is a big difference between Lee talking about a hot few weeks in AA for a 24 year old vaulting higher then legitimate prospects, or saying a 219 PA split with a .380 BABIP for DLC makes him a clear upgrade to every other OF in the organization and he'd take him over Bleday. Soler had around a .915 OPS over 900 PA in 2019/post 2021 (including playoffs). This is a very large sample size. Yes, 2020 was awful and so was his pre-2021 (see BABIP below). I'm not doing any mental gymnastics saying the word "covid" for 2020. I don't know what Soler shows up, but a big big difference here.
In 2021 the entire season, his BABIP was .250 (career .297). This is pre-.243, and post-.257. Interestingly, his pre BB/K last year was 9/28%.... and post 12.5%/18.8% < --- What happened here. Lineup protection in Atlanta? Got healthier? Approach? All of the above? Something is going to give here into he is either futile production and nothing like 2020, or he is more of a 2019/post21 guy.
In any event, this isn't a great deal. It's not a bad deal. It's just a complimentary veteran being brought in to upgrade a spot, which it certainly is on paper over Aguilar or Cooper as neither can approach .915 OPS land potential. Soler does have a .800 OPS career if that's all that we get, even if in ludicrous hot/cold streaks. There is certainly some big upside here if you are a Soler 2019/post-2021 believer (I'm not there, I am thinking he is probably a lower .800 OPS so 2019/post 2021 show improvement, but not a superstar like he was over those 900 PA. But you have to acknowledge he has shown he can do it twice now). Atlanta fans are upset and annoyed they didn't sign him right now.
We complain about them not doing something, then everything they do is bad. I can see and appreciate the idea here with him. We'll see if results follow. This means nothing without a CF, and they need to move Aguilar or more likely Cooper, but this moves the needle.
Also some interesting splits - he hits lefties. 2021 - .846 LHP / .711 RHP, Career .827 LHP / .786 RHP. (2019 he hit everything). Getting a lefty masher is ideal with this group. If nothing more, that's going to be very useful even if overpaid.
We'll see what happens. This isn't one to criticize. It's half the price of Schwarber and 1/3rd of Castellanos. It's a better signing than both of them as the money counts. Remember, Schwarber and Castellanos also had horrible 2020s so all 3 of them have epic duds very recently. No one is safe (even if Castellanos is safer. Schwarber probably isn't as he is the oldest).
