      • I wonder if the bidding just got too high for Castellanos, or if they wanted to get a deal done before the lockout. I kind of always thought he was most likely as far as a FA bat, but like I said previously, what they do now determines how much I like this. If this is THE big move, I hate it. If it's just the first in multiple big moves (Mish is saying this is "the first of MANY big moves on the horizon"), then I'm ok with it. The positive thing here is they spent some money. When is the last time this franchise gave out a deal that big? That in itself is encouraging. But now let's see what else happens.

        • i can tell you now garcia will be the next dickerson for us. Guy with slight success elsewhere who shits the bed for us. he has been a straight up bad player for all but 3 of his 10 year career, and only the last 2 years have been positive defensively. At our biggest position of strength prospect wise, this is an awful deal for a middling player

          • given the options now gone, if they plan to spend in FA the only real moves they can do now that would move the needle for me is correa or Bryant.

But that's just it - I don't want them to spend, just to say they spent something, which this kinda seems like. I agree, I'm trying to hold on to Mish's positivity and hinting at more coming, but this plus Sandy extension alone do not excite me.

              • the only positive news to come from this is mish saying they are far from done. they better be, because if this is their idea of spending money this ownership group is done. And we should find out a lot in the next 3 days because it seems like a lot of these players are taking this lockout deadline as a deadline to sign so they don't have to wait.

                • I can't wait for him to come here and fall on his face as usual for a Marlins parts bin signing.

                    • From Mish on Twitter:

Marlins were in on Buxton had he been available but the sense was, he wasn’t. I can assure you Miami is in on other impact players and I would be stunned if they don’t get something else big done. No further questions at this time.

Assuming they continue to make big moves via the trade market (and maybe another pitcher or two in FA), I don't think this is spending to spend. They needed to add power. They needed another corner bat. That's what he brings, and buying a guy like that rather than trading for one lets you use your assets to bring you more quality. Unless you were shelling out a lot of money (or kept Marte), this might be the only way to get an impact bat via FA. So again, I'm good with it if that's how the rest of the offseason plays out. If this is the big move, and is used to prove they're willing to spend, then yeah, I completely agree with you. Let's hope that's not the case, though.

He's been in the big leagues for 10 years and has had a WAR over 1.0 just 3 times. they have limited money to spend and just bought high on a guy for his year 31-35 seasons at a position where they have a ton of prospect depth. he's also been straight up bad every other year since 2016.

                            • If this is one of several moves, ok. If this becomes the "big" move, forget this team lol.

                              • would have much rather signed conforto. Better player, younger, higher ceiling, and can play a little more CF if needed. If we were going to foolishly go 4 years on an OF id much rather have spent the money it took to get him.
