    • Marlins baseball operations president Larry Beinfest spoke to reporters before Monday’s game in San Francisco.

      On the Marlins playoff hopes?
“You have to look at the standings and be realistic – there are quite a few teams ahead of us in the wild card chase. We made a little bit of ground on the Braves but they’re still quite in the distance with the Mets and the Phillies head of us.”

Will the Marlins make any trades?
“We’ll see. If there’s something that makes sense we’ll do it. Are we going to force anything at this point? I wouldn’t say so. Are we driven by the need to move money? That’s a no. Whatever we do is not going to be because we need to get the payroll in line.

“But there may be some things we want to do now, again, I’ve said it often, we’re going to open a new ballpark in 18 months and everything we do now is very important as we look forward to the opening of that building. We want to be very competitive when we move in there so we want to be very careful with everything we do. And also there may be moves that may pay fruit when we get there into ’11 and onto ’12.

      Chances Marlins make no trade?
“That is a possibility. Again, you never know. Sometimes people say the best trade you ever made is the one you don’t make.”

      • Be realistic? Why don't you be realistic and get Jorge's shit out of here and maybe winning will be a lot more realistic for this ball club. Get us a BP arm too while you're at it, Mr.Beinfest. There's around 60 games to go Beinfest, be realistic and fucking do something.

        • He is being realistic. You are out of your mind and unrealistic if you think moving Cantu and adding one BP arm is going to put this team on course to win 42 games in two months.

          • You can't give up right now. Not when you've won 8 of 11 and the SP's are coming around.

Get a bp arm and deal Cantu and let's make it happen. Hanley's bound to wake up.

              • Chris Coghlan's knee injury has the Marlins reconsidering their trade options. The player who most is impacted is Cody Ross.

For weeks, the club has fielded trade offers for the versatile outfielder. Yet, losing Coghlan, coupled with the team being over .500, has the Marlins leaning towards keeping Ross.

Ross, who is making $4.45 million, has one more arbitration season remaining. For the right offer, the Marlins would consider trading Ross, who has attracted attention from the Braves, Dodgers and Red Sox. But the deal would have to completely make sense.

Also, moving Ross would be a sign they team is throwing in the towel on their chances this season.

Based on how they're playing, Coghlan's injury has theMarlins re-evaluating.

Coghlan has a torn left meniscus in his left knee. If surgery is required, he will be out six to eight weeks, which means he could be lost for the rest of the season.

With Coghlan out, prospect Logan Morrison has been called up from Triple-A New Orleans. Morrison and Emilio Bonifacio are expected to split time in left field, replacing Coghlan.

Ross is the club's best defensive outfielder, and he's been a steady influence on rookie right fielder Mike Stanton. The Marlins are realistic about their playoff hopes, but with the team winning eight of 11 since the All-Star Break has management considering staying the course for the remainder of the season.

The player most likely to be traded is Jorge Cantu. Coghlan has been considered the option to move from left field to third base if Cantu is dealt. Bonifacio is an option to play third, or platoon the position with Wes Helms.
                Cody Ross off the market?

                • Ross is still on the block even with the Coghlan injury. If Cantu goes to the Rockies look for us to get Ryan Spilborghs as part of the deal.

Hearing tho that Wes Helms maybe off the block, they like him as a vet in the clubhouse should we make a run and if Cantu gets dealt,he would play 3B more since Coghlan is down.

                  • I was just thinking about that today as I heard the Rockies might be selling, but might also still be after Cantu. They said they were willing to part with Spilborghs and that has me thinking, if Spilborghs is sent here, would that mean Cody is out? If not, then what happens with LoMo?

Ross can be had-the problem teams are having is they want him as a 4th OF and he will be making alot of cash. They also think he will be released in the offseason by us,so they are all thinking"Why trade a young ML ready arm and a prospect for a overpaid 4th OF that we could get for nothing in the offseason"

                      • I like Ross in CF and Maybin has yet to prove anything for us. I've always been very reluctant to let go of Cody, I think we are better off packaging Maybin, Cantu and maybe West for a good SP and maybe some bp help + prospects. The perfect team for us to deal with would be the cubs imo. We could possibly have a package starting with Lilly or Dempster. Reason why I mention Cantu to Cubs is because i've heard they're trying to deal Lee and Ramirez. Cantu can serve as a cheaper option for them til their specs are ready.

                        • Yankees on Sorias no trade list. Wonder if the Marlins might be on there? Also wonder if Nuñez and Soria would butt heads, as Soria would take Nuñez duties as closer, pushing Leo to the 8th inning. Soria is signed through 2011, makes about 3 mil per yr. What can it take for us to take Soria? Maybin and ptbnl? Will you do it?

                          • lmao Maybin and ptbnl wouldnt get us Soria. Moore is a bad GM but I'd think it would take more then that.

                            • Isn't that what the Pads wanted last year for Bell?

                              * just checked it out, Pads wanted Miller or West last yr for Bell.

                              • I mean I'd send Miller a care package if they took him, Maybin and another prospect.
