They have the same record and the same amount of ground to make up to reach the playoffs as the Mets but they arrived in the same place, Pennant Race Limbo, via a different direction. One week from trading players such as Jorge Cantu and David Ross, the Marlins got hot enough to put everything on hold. They have won eight of their past 10 games, including six of them by one run.
"Things changed all of a sudden with them with a couple of comeback wins," said one GM who was in talks with Florida. "They pick up another game or two and are five or six out, they'll probably go for it."
But look at the big picture: after 98 games they were a .500 team, six games out in the loss column in the wild card race with one of the worst defenses in the league. That is not the profile of a playoff team.

Not a knee-jerk reaction from the bullpen blowing another game, i meant to post this earlier. But i still think we should be sellers, instead of buyer or doing nothing.
Yes, we have been on a nice roll, winning 8 of our last 11, but during that stretch the bullpen blown at least 7-8 leads. They're absolutely garage, if we want to legit contenders we got to totally reconstruct it. We need a LOOGY, and setup-men, and hope veras/sanches/hensley can figure it out in the 7th inn. That not going to be cheap, since everyone wants MRP and teams always overpay for relievers at the deadline.
It just unrealistic to expect this team to jump 5 teams in the wild card, and the braves are going to run away with the division.
Also the market Ross will never be high as it is now, and IMO we should sell high, get a couple more prospects, and tough out the short-term consequences as out (Boner in CF). Ross has been great for us, but he doesnt figure into our long-term plans, and will have no trade value in the offseason, when teams know that he will be dumped.
We should only be buying if that trade, will help us contend in the future, like the Haren trade, and not rentals like NJ and Rhodes
Trade Ross and Cantu, and stick it out with Helms and Cantu. And in the off-season work on improving the bullpen and sign Uggla and Nolasco to long-terms deal. In a dream world, the marlins would lock up Stanton.
The 2011 squad will be fine with a Lineup of: Hanley, Logan, Gaby, CC, Uggla, Paulino/Baker, Stanton, and Maybin. And a rotation of: JJ, Nolasco, Sanchez, West, Sanabia/Volstad.
Hopefully one or two of Jenning, Ceda, and Marinez can step up in the bullpenOriginally posted by Matt WilsonFish and Chips just became the smartest man on the board

I don't even consider trading Ross and Cantu to be sellers. Maybin kills cody on the base paths and is a better defender in center, even if Cody goes back to being the upper 700 OPS bat, Maybin just needs to OPS around 700 to match that production with the other stuff he does. And with Cody shitting like he is, and seriously actually playing himself towards non tender candidacy, it won't take much at all for Maybin to outproduce what he's doing.
