  • Jose Urena has quietly had a much improved year from last year based on his peripherals. HOpe they keep him for next year and deal straily, Urena still has 3 years of team control and is a very solid back of the rotation guy. Needs to go deeper into games and therefore pitch more innings to take the next step though

    • I don't care who opens the 2019 season with the Marlins. All I know is the September 2019 starting rotation should look like (imo)...

Dan Straily (he's cheap, cost controlled and still in prime years. No reason to rush a bad trade)
      Jose Urena
      Sandy Alcantara
      Trevor Richards
      Nick Neidert

Jordan Yamamoto, Zac Gallen, Merandy Gonzalez, Jeff Brigham, Dillon Peters are the next guys in line.

I also want to say Dustin Beggs and Cody Poteet earn the 'Tom Koehler' award for pitcher who is likely to be thrown into unimportant games in June then suddenly become the team's #5 starter for multiple years.

2019 rotation: LH Chen and C. Smith RH Richards, Urena, and Lopez - those are ones I feel fairly certain about (as long as Smith mends). Straily seems likely to be traded. BP Brigham, Kinley, Eveld, Alcantara, Quintana, seem likely new faces. Fast risers for rotation: Beggs, Yamamoto and Neidert. As to the Tom Koehler award, Alacantara fits (and maybe Brigham). I know some are dreamin' on Sandy, but the WHIP and K/W ratio have to change before he has a shot. I can't make a case for Poteet even getting a chance to compete for the award.

I see no need to trade for pitching, which is fortunate because the team needs a whole new everyday lineup.

        • I really wish given our depth of SP that we make richards a reliever unless theyfeel he has another step he can take. He looks to me like he maxed out his potential as a starter and has real potential as a middle relief weapon who can go multiple innings because his changeup is absurd.

          • I'd move Chen to the 'pen by then. He's an average pitcher at best and giving him starts isn't helping the team's future at all. His contract is an albatross but at this point you just accept that fact.

He has cleared the minimum (which I believe is 43 days up which he has). He's going to get somewhere around $30+k a year for life and free health insurance. I don't think actual numbers are available for what the tiers are, but I don't suspect he will accrue enough service time to jump anything notable above that.

In any event, Galloway has won at life by getting to the bigs both on personal and financial levels. It's a nice story of perseverance. He should position himself to be a coach in a few years and he's set.

              • Swingsandmishes podcast tomorrow supposedly has Boras talking about Jose and Koehler talking about that day. Interesting to hear what they have to say. A truly franchise crippling event.

                • If anyone wants to be thoroughly annoyed go look at Trevor Williams numbers for the year and look what we traded him for and how soon after we spent a high pick on him that we traded him for that garbage. The throwing away of draft picks for years is why our farm system was the way it was which necessitated a rebuild.

Didn't even have to trade him. Teams usually just give the other team CASH(if anything at all) but we know Jeff didn't believe in that.

Jeff believed in if u were NOT on a Top 10 list that u were garbage which is why teams always were raping us

                    Will NOT happen anymore!!!

The list of guys we just gave up for nothing is ridiculous. Paddack, Williams, Naylor as well as many others. Loria is an absolute moron and it isnt surprising how pathetic this franchise is given that he couldnt even understand the concept of spending a little more on player development up front rather than making moronic splashy free agent signings for beyond mediocre players later.

If you want to be even more annoyed look back through this forum when the trade happened and see how 99% of this board defended the deal. I'm sure there will be a lot of revisionist history on that one.

All 3 of those trades are awful tho. I especially hated the Paddack trade because you could tell just how dominant he was at an early age.

The paddack trade was even more infuriating because not only was it obvious how dominant he was, but it was even more obvious how we clearly werent anything close to a playoff team and Fernando Rodney was the poster child for guy who was pitching way over his head and was about to revert to the mean.

Dont even get me started on the joke that was that cashner deal. I said it at the time that was absolutely pathetic. And we got incredibly lucky that we were able to get Castillo back or else it would have been an even bigger disaster.

                          • Williams isn't that good despite this season. That's some Pirates magic. He is a Koehler. I agree though, still annoying as club controlled Koehler's are useful.

The only ones I think that kill me are Hand, Castillo, Paddack, and maybe DeScalfani (if he can stay healthy). Those 4 guys would be very useful for obvious reasons. I would feel great dropping Castillo and Paddack on the current staff and drafting bats first 10 picks

Rotographs lists the current top ten Marlin prospects. Hilarious! Maybe one player deserves to be there, Neidert. The rest of the top five? I'd say pitchers Yamamoto, Beggs, Eveld and Austin Dean. Admittedly, that's based on only the reality of their performance over the past season.
