Among the Marlins first wave of September call ups tomorrow : Nick Wittgren, Sandy Alcantara, Lewis Brinson, Chad Wallach, Jeff Brigham.

Maybe 1 of them can get an out

I agree but I haven't seen any chatter about it here or anywhere. If something was brewing I'm sure we'd hear something. Instead it's just crickets.

      • Home Chen continues to be amazing. 1.77 ERA over 71 home innings.

Lopez shut down with a mild shoulder strain. That sucks, but Brigham gets the start today. It'll be interesting to see what he shows and if he can make himself into a rotation candidate for next year.

We won't be getting the best of Brigham as he tailed off toward season's end. I wish he would be used out of the pen, the area of greatest need. Closing in college got him drafted.

          • Looking ahead to next season, there are some optimistic notes. Ace starting pitchers are those with a WHIP below 1.00. There have been only a half dozen of those this season: Sale, Verlander, Scherzer, DeGrom, Kluber and Nola. Chen has pitched at that level since the All Star break. Only half a dozen more have managed a WHIP under 1.10: Cole, Snell, Corbin, Greinke, Manaea, and Bauer. Over his last five starts, Straily has done that as well.

            • Look forward to seeing Chen and Straily pitch next year guys!

              • 2 innings 0 Hits-someone should have told Mattingly that Wittgren was in NOLA

Brigham needs to be put in the pen

I get it. Protocol is to ridicule Chen and Straily no matter how well they pitch.

                    • I think Straily is just fine, but touting him as something fans should look forward to for the future is laughable.

I'd concur that the team future is bleak, but a return to Oriole form for Chen would be helpful. I'm happy for him. As for Straily, a strong finish would increase his trade value ... which would be more helpful than laughable in my mind.

                        • We really have a lot of options going forward that we really should be able to fill out a deep and very solid but not spectacular rotation moving forward that is very cheap for a while.

Next year we have Chen, Straily, Urena as vets under team control plus young guys like Alcantara, Richards, Lopez, Smith, and then guys who probably start next year in AAA like Neidert and Gallen.

                          • And it's pretty clear just going by the depth of the hitting in the organization that were gonna have to sign 1-2 vets to be in the lineup everyday to start the year next year at least.

If JT stays (which is a huge if in and of itself), then we have several spots locked down

                            C- JT
                            1b- ?
2b- Castro hopefully to allow diaz to continue to develop
                            SS- Rojas/Riddle again?
                            3b- Anderson is a lock
LF- Dean would seem to be given a chance at least either in LF or RF.
                            CF- Brinson is a lock
                            RF- ?

So presuming we trade Dietrich we would need a 1b and corner OF type to fill those spots until Harrison is ready (could be 2020) and until we figure out a long term plan at 1b. Can be a good opportunity to get a guy on a good 1 year deal and flip them at the deadline. Especially if the free agent market is like it was last offseason. Daniel Murphy at 1b? Markakis? McCutchen? Steve Pearce?

Our lineup is much more up in the air next year than the rotation. Brinson having a good september would go a long way as well if he can build on the month he had prior to getting injured.

                            • These lineups mattingly keeps writing are absurd. Its september and we're 30 games under, Brinson and Dean are hitting 7 and 8 and Ortega and Starlin are hitting 1st and 4th. Give the kids the most ab's and see what happens.

That's an excellent perspective. You've said it all.
