  • I think fangraphs sums up Dean pretty well (from May 2018, https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/the-...ospects-108/):

    Austin Dean, OF, Miami (Profile)
Selected by Miami in the fourth round of the 2012 draft out of a Texas high school, Dean appeared — when Eric Longenhagen published the Marlins list in February of 2017 — to have fallen into a sort of prospect netherspace, possessing too little footspeed and athleticism for center field but too little offensive ability to sustain a corner-outfield role. The Marlins’ assignments appeared to indicate a lack of enthusiasm, as well: after passing all of the 2016 and -17 seasons at Double-A, Dean began the present campaign there, as well.

In this case, however, Dean quickly earned a promotion, producing a strikeout rate and isolated-power mark that still rank second and sixth, respectively, among the 97 total Southern League batters to record at least 80 plate appearances. The early returns at Triple-A have been promising for a player in his first exposure to a new level. In particular, Dean’s contact skills have translated well: among batters with 50 or more plate appearances, Dean’s strikeout and swinging-strike rates place in the 91st and 97th percentile. Meanwhile, he’s produced roughly league-average power numbers. While the offensive burden of a corner-outfield role remains high, Dean could probably survive with slightly less power on contact than most given his bat-to-ball skills.

BA says - fringy LF glove, average speed, fringy arm

So this is a poor man's Jeff Conine if he works out? He's going to need to hit .280, walk 8%+, whiff less than 15%, and rack up doubles. I don't see Anderson (or Conine's) power numbers coming unless this is really a major swing tweak and that breakout is coming in a few years.

All about giving him LF for August and September though and maybe lightning strikes. He's earned it.

    • No Victor Victor for the Marlins just agreed to terms with the Orioles.

      • He's not even a free agent yet, how can they agree to terms. Also, the orioles of all teams are the one to sign him when they literally ignore the IFA market every year? Very weird. I think that leaves us for the most money left for his brother.

Sources: Victor Victor Mesa does NOT have a deal in place with the Orioles. He has not been declared a free agent and has not worked out for teams. He will host a showcase for all 30 teams once he becomes eligible. The latest:
That makes more sense. Id also be ok with us taking more IFA money in some deals instead of an additional prospect if it gives us the most money for these guys. Makes too much sense. Cuban AND an unbelievable prospect. Would be an enormous addition to the system. Not sure how his brother compares to him as a player if that is who we end up with.

Deal isn't done but hearing that #Orioles and #Marlins making huge push for Cuban sensation Victor Victor Mesa; #Orioles are close according to industry source
Wonder if we can get in the mix if we acquire some IFA money in a deadline deal.

        • Just because they can't sign him yet doesn't mean they can't negotiate. Looking like the Marlins are going to miss on him. Never believed they would actually sign him tho.

Still way to early. Teams can add money until he signs, then it is likely he signs with the highest bidder and we arent that far off the orioles so its possible we can add money to our allotment, and playing in little havana cant hurt.

            • Soto will be the best hitter in the NL very shortly into his career. A shame we werent able to convince them to include him in a JT deal before he broke out before the year

FWIW, Victor VIctor is apparently a serial liker and liked like 4 different posts from marlins fans in the past week talking about joining the marlins and future marlins as well as posts about not having a deal with the orioles. Actually he's liked a ton of marlins posts and nothing really about any other team. For whatever the hell thats worth.

sure, the nats could sell. but they may also buy. and to that end, they checked in again on JT Realmuto, the nats are believed willing to up their original bid, but the marlins aren't anxious to trade him and the price remains understandably steep -- figure robles plus plus.
Robles and Kieboom and a pitcher would really make me consider it.

Robles straight up for a couple years of Realmuto would work for me ... but Raudy Read would be a welcome addition.

                  • Robles, Luis Garcia, and Raudy Read and a pitcher would be a great deal as well. Robles is gonna be an absolute stud.

                    • I don't know how hard the Nationals would consider Robles for Realmuto straight up since everybody and their mother expects Robles to become a star, but if the Nationals are serious about competing right now Realmuto would be a ridiculously positive addition to their lineup.

I also can't believe there's actually a player named Victor Victor Mesa. I thought a bunch of people were writing typos at first.

I hear you for sure, but I’m less concerned about his strike out rate than I am that he’s our top prospect. I like the guy but it’s scary he’s out top prospect considering what we said goodbye to in the off season.

                        • Is harrison our unanimous top prospect now across all sites? Cause I view Diaz as our top prospect (though not the highest ceiling) and Guzman and alcantara above him as well

                          • Prediction time. 4 days to deadline. My guess is that Maybin and Ziegler go and that's it.

I would bet the farm on Robles and give the Nats whatever they want. Juan Soto is now probably the most valued commodity around ... and Robles was rated higher.

Well, I think the two are directly related. A guy with such a glaring flaw is still considered our best prospect. Not a good sign.

                              • Terrible trade deadline day for us yesterday

Houston got Pressley instead of Conley(We asked for Martin and 2 mid level prospects)
Milw got Moose instead of DD
Seattle got St Louis RP instead of Ziegler
Reports were Victor Victor is going to Baltimore
