I’m super worried he is going to opt out after this year if he goes crazy the next month and a half

    • How the F did Altuve not swing at that?

      • Tremendous win. Great job by Garrett to battle and get through 5 scoreless even though there was a lot of luck. Great job by Scott to battle as well and get through the inning unscathed. This lineup is so much better than before the deadline. Would be awesome if they would score runs between the 4th and 7th inning from time to time but I’ll take it

          • A full game over the cubs now, might be just half a game back from the giants after tonight if the rays beat them

I thought I read somewhere in here that he and Cooper were a wash, at best.

I said he was at worst a wash with Cooper when we got him. I think you may be referring to Lee Stone though.

I read that as a Lee call out.

Why, so the team gets $16.5m to sign Hoskins, Muncy, J. Turner, Teoscar, Conforto, Pederson, or Soler instead?

Bell has a .370 BABIP since becoming a Marlin (career .287) and he's on a HR bender. He's going to be normal .270/.350/.450+ Bell soon. He's poor defensively and coming off a bad stint with SD and Wash. See above same price level alternative also, as well as there are cheaper guys team's may prefer (Grichuk, Winker, Duvall, etc.). I think it's a real low probability he opts out unless he does in fact have a 1.100 OPS here on out and we know that isn't happening. And if that happens, the best he may get is a 2 year deal. Just look at all these "slugger" deals with Conforto, Joc taking a tender, etc. Baseball is moving on from this type of player being an expensive free agent. Castellanos has been a disaster for the Phillies.

If anything also, I think the Marlins can extend him a year like aforementioned. If he looks real good, give him a 1 year extension so he's closer to 2/$28-30 w/ incentives. I'm not worried about this one at all regardless of what happens.

When was the last time other than Soler where the marlins spent big in free agency? This is a horrible hitting free agency class outside of ohtani who we are obviously not players for.

Hoskins coming off an acl and probably wont be let go by the phillies. Competing with the dodgers and the rest of baseball for Muncy. Justin Turner didnt want to sign here last offseason. Teoscar hernandez has a sub .700 OPS this year, isnt a first baseman, and is a terrible defensive player. Michael Conforto has been hurt or mediocre for 3 years. Joc Pederson is a platoon guy and a terrible fit along sanchez. Soler we already have, so that doesnt replace Bell.

None of those guys are good fits, want to be here, or worth the money they will get. Losing bell would be a big blow. We have no 1b ready to replace him any time soon. We desperately need him to opt in or at the very least opt out and then re-sign here for 2 years.

                      • Ideally, in the likely scenario where Soler opts out, we move Arraez to 1b, Bell becomes the DH masher, Edwards plays 2b full time, and we sign/trade for a C, SS, and also a corner OF (more of a luxury).

                        • We're now just .5 out of the 2nd wild card and 2.5 back from the phillies. It's hard to get right into the sweet spot, but the worst possible spot is the number 2 wild card spot. The #3 spot plays the winner of the central, and that is going to be a fairly average team regardless of who it is. It's on the road, but that would likely be the easiest opponent, and if you win you avoid the braves in the first round and just hope someone can knock them off in a small sample. Dodgers arent exactly slackers but id rather play literally anyone other than the braves Number 2 wild card probably plays the hardest wild card team, no home playoff games in that round, and you get the braves in the division series if you win. Worst case scenario. #1 wild card would be unlikely, but it would be awesome with at least a few home playoff games, though you get the braves in the division series and you still have a super hard wild card round with likely the phillies coming to town.

#3 seems like the sweet spot and best case scenario, we would just really need to win that matchup with whatever teams comes out of the central because i want to see some home playoff games. This stadium would be so sick filled up with all the fairweather fans out there cheering in a full house.

The Giants have had 132 more out of zone pitches called strikes than the Marlins.
That sounds about right on the eye test. Seems like the majority of those calls go against us, while the same pitch is called a ball for us.

I think you have to retain 1 of either Soler or Bell. And whoever they do retain should be the DH next year.

It doesn't matter, getting a home series would be a huge deal, but other than that, either way the winner is going to have to play Dodgers or Braves in the next round it's going to be a fucking tough task.
