we traded for a lefty reliever that the padres DFA'd Jose Castillo. Has barely pitched at the mlb level since a really good year in 2018. essentially just a waiver claim for more pitching depth. He replaces Jerar on the 40 man.

Oh I see what you are saying now. Yea I have no idea why they didn't move Barnes to the 60 and just keep Jerar if they had to make room for Castillo. The only explanation there is, Jerar sucks so who cares and they have other moves brewing so just cut the kid loose now and see if someone claims him to do him right.

Barnes to 60 and R. Garcia to DFA opens up 2 spots, and I imagine Sixto can also go to the 60. Simpson, Hampson, and maybe Yuli and Cueto, seem like they can be cleared out fast too. They could move around 4-7 guys pretty easily here IMO if upcoming moves are all of the minor league variety. They have some space to maneuver.

Some thoughts:

1 - Because what happens when they come back and now you've promoted a guy to the 40 you never had to use, and have to expose him to waivers to remove when someone comes back healthy. I do think you want to minimize that as much as possible even with nothing AAAA players. Losing multiple Lindgrens impacts minor league depth - someone has to throw those innings in AAA and it's not like you can just conjure up multiple Smeltzers. Those guys are all signed in AAA right now preseason and the team needs those hundreds of innings. So there is some practical need in not exposing guys even if in the big picture, none of this batch of guys - we'll call them the Dunands (but what a great HR still!) - are needle movers at the MLB level. They still can't lose too many of them.

2 - Because while perhaps unlikely, once you're moved to the 60 day it is a hard 60 day and you're out minimum that long. Maybe some guys recover faster? I know Garcia is out longer, but I think there is a medical component to this and I bet some team doctors may give 4-6 week timetables and based on that, they may not be eligible at the initial onset of the injury for the 60 man. That may become apparent later in the process and hence, why put on down the road. I have seen guys moved to the 60 man after 60 days you know.

3 - Money, and this one is the rare non-Bruce dig as every team does this. I believe players make a little more on the 40 man and certain service time benefits kick in if called up and then down. So "Lindgren" costs you a few extra thousand/tens of thousand if he is just sitting on the 40 man versus just controlled in AAA. It does mean a little. A business shaving $100k a year on minor transaction practice like this is legitimate money that pays for an IFA free agent, so why not? Bruce jokes aside, no sense in burning this money unless there is a practical need at the MLB level. I think it is a minor consideration but is part of the equation. It's some combination of the 3 to me, with heavy emphasis on the first two.

I guess number 2 answers it best. I wasnt necessarily saying move guys on in place of the other guys you put on the 60 day il. Im saying when you know a guy is going to be out 60 days, is there a downside to putting them on the 60 day il and just having say, 35 guys on the 40 man roster? Obviously if you put a guy on you have to DFA them if you were to take them off. Im just saying, for example, Barnes. He had hip surgery, he will be out for the year. Why not just get the clearing of the 40 man spot out of the way since it will inevitably happen? It really doesnt make a difference because if they need the spot they will move him, im just saying is there any benefit to keeping him on the 40 man until you absolutely need to transfer him to the 60 day when you need the 40 man spot.

It's just my OCD. I see we have 39 guys on the 40 man roster currently. why not just get it out of the way and transfer Barnes, Garcia who has already been out 60 days and roll with 36 guys until you want to use the spots on someone?

Also, I need to stop seeing Cooper and de la Cruz in the middle of this lineup. Dlc needs to be a bottom of the order guy who can drive in runs and Cooper needs to be shipped to mars

Also I’d like to see stallings fucking gone already. It’s absurd that a guy can be completely and utterly horrific for almost 2 years with 0 repercussions. He is terrible. There is nothing he is good at. How does he continue to have a roster spot?

This team has a horrific lineup combined with some of the worst luck I’ve seen for two straight weeks when it comes to hard hit balls directly at defenders and absurd catches against them

He is making $3 million and they gave up a pretty solid package for him.

It's why you generally don't spend big on a 32 year old catcher who had played one full season to that point(or two if you count the shortened 2020).

This might be the weirdest thing I’ve ever said, but if the Marlins trade Tanner Scott, they might as well just become sellers and not buy.

I haven’t read enough to understand the logic, but trading Tanner Scott makes absolutely zero sense. It makes less sense than trading Soler, who shouldn’t be traded at this point either, I don’t care if he comes back next year or not.

At some point, ownership has to try to win…
