  • mish says he thinks they are going to acquire another impactful SP at the deadline. They arent going to let cueto pitch any games that are close and he isnt in the rotation. Why they wouldnt just cut the fucking guy when he clearly sucks and they clearly have no confidence to not be shelled anyway is beyond me. but that is the sense he gets regarding pitching. We arent going to get key games started by cueto, hoeing, or anyone else other than Rogers or Cabrera.

All depends on who's being targeted and what team, though (i.e. some teams would prefer prospects to money, and vice versa).
A thing they should be dramatically doing to keep as many arms together as possible, and target luxury offenders or teams wanting dollars for Ohtani - SD, LAD, LAA, and dare I say, NYM.

Imagine throwing the middle fingers up and blowing them away from Max - yes that Max, Canha, and Pham. That gets Mets down $30m bucks (plus Max could opt in you know for $43 million(!)) with in luxury terms means $40 million bucks and getting a potential Max liability off the books. That saves another $50+ million as a repeat luxury offender. That gets $90-100 million off the Mets books and that's probably 20-25% of Ohtani's impending deal. That's a lot of money even for Papa Steve. That's the kind of absorbing money move where Bruce can flex his wallet versus the prospects. Would Bruce dare add $60-70m in payroll over 2 seasons (real money is lower than luxury)? This may be a bad example in division and Max may be a little cooked at this point, but you get it. The Padres, Angels, Blue Jays, and Yankees are all teetering on that line and could shave some dollars off next year players for sure if they start to sell. A lot of good players on those teams (H. Kim, Snell, + Hader comes to mind), but those are probably July 31st moves and the Marlins do need someone now, but just saying. Maybe they can absorb some real money. I doubt it though.

A more conservative absorption may be Goldschmidt, DeJong, and Montgomery/Flaherty. That trifecta makes a lot of sense and depending on the SP and date of trade, saves the Cards $40-50m. That plus Eder and some other nice prospects makes some sense for them for 2 guys they won't have next year and a very old Goldschmidt. It's not hard to sell that is a good $40-50m spent over 2 seasons with where the team is today, and that also prevents the Phillies from making that same trade, etc.

Lots of possibilities if they will spend..... which includes absorbing Corbin and Candelario + Harvey make a lot of sense.

The guy wouldn't spend 70M over a few years in the offseason. You think he's going to do that over 2?

          • this whole idea that the cardinals are going to trade major pieces as opposed to retooling for next year just isnt going to happen. they dont do that, and honestly they shouldnt. Their team is good, their lineup is pretty elite with a combo of great young talent and high quality veterans. They will hire a new manager and find a way to get a good frontline starter and be right back to being a 90 win team next year. I highly doubt goldschmidt is going anywhere. they've got the 7th best OPS in baseball, 12th in runs. Theyve got wainwright, flaherty, and montgomery coming up as free agents. They will find a way to get some pitching for next year through free agency and trades and be right back to the class of the NL Central.

I agree, but now would be the time to deal Goldschmidt I would think.

Where did I say I think they will do that? But it is something they should do as a smart organization would you know, buy talent rather then give up assets for it with this payroll (for years). It would be the "Werth" moment to take on expensive guys who plug the holes and not moving Meyer, Eder, Berry, Watson, and Cappe in that process IMO. I'm just saying, that luxury tax is real and maybe there is an advantage with someone Ohtani hunting to get money off the books.

Yes, it is now or never. Cardinals need A LOT of pitching. They have Mikolas.... and Libertore, Hence, and Graffeco. We'd consider that having something like Cabrera, Eder, and Meyer, so they need at least 3 SP for volumes of innings to fold in the kids. If they can get two more (Rogers and Eder?) and sign a third with a lot of the money Goldschmidt (and DeJong and others added to that deal may clear), I'm not sure Goldschmidt's age 36 year old season is an obstacle for them. Contreras, Gorman, Donovan, Edman, Arenado, Walker, Carlson, and Nootbar is a strong position core and they have other interesting guys and can sign a DH. It makes a lot of sense for them to get rid of Goldschmidt, Montgomery, Flaherty, Hicks, etc. and use saved money in FA. Problem is to me, I bet they really like Mick Abel too.

                  • it's never. The cardinals are not a small market team. They are going to keep goldschmidt and retool for next year trading some of the outfield surplus for pitching and they will be fine. they won 90 games last year with the pretty much same roster and they are in a mediocre division. They will get a guy under team control in a trade and sign an arm or 2 and be right back in it next year. Prospects 2-5 in their system are starting pitchers, with 3 of those 4 in AA and above. Mikolas is a solid 3 or 4, They have dakota hudson who was good a few years ago, was a good prospect, and has just been injury riddled the last few years. Liberatore was a highly touted prospect who has struggled but still has potential. Steven Matz has been a decent pitcher on and off for years.

There are good pitchers on the market, obviously you have ohtani who wont go there, but you also have urias, Aaron Nola, Giolito, they can re-sign montgomery who is good, Blake Snell has been phenomenal.

There are plenty of options out there for them to strike big for that front line rotation guy they need, they have a good system to get a guy in a trade if the opportunity arises, and their farm system is top heavy with close to mlb ready starting pitching talent. I just highly doubt they deal goldschmidt.

                    • there is an instagram account with a pretty ridiculous mock trade. its mlbnerds and it's saying if the padres sell, they would trade us Soto, Luis Garcia, and Matt Carpenter for Cabrera, DLC, Meyer, Berry, Eder, and Mack. So everything for a year and a half of Soto.

                      • Cueto was reinstated, and Johnathan Davis was transferred to the 60-day DL. Sean Reynolds was also optioned.

They also have a glut of OF. They can sell without completely retooling.

what was even the skill set that made vvm appealing? He has no power, doesn’t appear to be a good hitter, didn’t walk much. Just a little speed in center?

the other guy they were trying to sign around the same time, Sandy Gaston, also sucks for the rays
