  • we all talk marte and aguilar/cooper at the deadline, but the more I watch this team and after seeing how they've acted at other deadlines the last few years, I really think pablo could be on the move come deadline day. given our upper minors SP depth with Meyer, Eder, Cabrera, and Sixto coming back next year, and especially with 2 wild cards now and more teams than ever thinking they are still in the race, I have a feeling they might try to flip him to get a guy like Keibert ruiz or another top tier prospect catcher who would be under team control for years.

Pablo has been great this year but he has a bit of an injury history, is clearly the #3 guy in this rotation without even counting those top tier prospects and sixto coming back, he starts arbitration next year, and I really think we need to try and take advantage of the dodgers SP desperation right now and make a move. I just don't see how they get a legitimate catcher without doing a move like that. Those type of catchers don't hit the market and if they do, they get huge deals, plus trying to get one through the draft is a crapshoot and takes a few years even if they turn out to be good. I think people would look at that as typical marlins behavior but I think it would be really brilliant planning for the future. Throw in yimi as the dodgers always shore up their bullpen at the deadline and we can get ruiz and another lesser prospect to improve the overall team moving forward.

    • we have just 2 guys who have over an .800 OPS at this point- Elieser hernandez's unforgettable 2 ab's, and Cooper who somehow is putting up great numbers after being useless for 2 months. Just critical that we figure out how to get impact bats in the system and into the everyday lineup. The worst part of watching this is that we have a lineup of 5-6 really solid hitters who can give you upper .700s OPS, just no one who can give you star level production so we count on guys who should be role players on good teams to carry us.

Really wish we could have seen a team that acquired Contreras to improve Alfaro, Kimbrel to push everyone down a role in the bullpen and shut down close games that we have consistently blown, and Brian Anderson staying healthy and giving us the steady but not spectacular production he has given the last few years. Not even to mention what sixto being healthy and giving us 4 monster SP's could have done. But that's baseball. All focus needs to be on getting star level team controlled bats moving forward. Need 3 new legit impact bats before opening day next year factoring in the likely departure of Aguilar and Marte.

I was actually wondering if Rogers could be in play. He’s been better than they hoped, and he’s looked a little more human as of late. I wonder if they don’t view him like they viewed Gallen, and try to sell high even though they have more controlled years left with him vs someone like Pablo. Just a thought.

On another note, Mish said on his latest podcast that Marte is going to want (and get) 4 years, but the Marlins don’t want to do that. He said he’s not sure they’re willing to guarantee him 3 years. He made it seem like they’ve botched the whole process, and he thinks he’ll be traded at the deadline. That’s pretty unfortunate because I’m not sure who’s going to be playing CF for them next year as there aren’t really many exciting options. Hopefully if they do trade him, they can maximize his value and get some good players for him, but it hard to see a path to fielding a contending lineup after sending away the best bat on an otherwise pretty poor lineup, and no reason the believe they’ll spend a significant amount of money to add one or two bats that would make any kind of an impact.

I honestly don't know why Mish is so convinced that Marte is going to get 4 years. I really like Starling, but he's going to be 33 in October. Just 2 OFs got free agent deals of at least 4 years last offseason (Ozuna and Springer) and both were at least 2 years younger. I can't see a team giving Marte more than 3 years, especially in the current environment (teams still feeling the pandemic effect, CBA ending/negotiations, etc.).

                    • I’ve found that Mish is diligent in finding out info and getting scoops, but his own personal takes are almost across the board bad.

He was very adamant that Marte wants and will get 4 years, which is just odd considering the last few years in free agency. Maybe he’s right, but I can’t see it. I do agree with his take about needing to play Lewin Diaz every day though. I think they need to trade Aguilar, even though I do like him. I would hold on to Cooper another year just because he’s still cheap, his ability to play OF, and there will likely be a DH next season.

i think he gets 2 years of good money with a 3rd year option for lesser money. And I don't see it coming from us. Im cool with him leaving if the reason is we don't want to go over 2 years. I don't think that would be wise unless that 3rd year is very low money. Definitely offer him the qualifying offer though if we are in some strange universe where he doesn't get dealt within the next 2 weeks.

I really like mish, he's kind of offputting sometimes though with the opinions on how important people in the marlins organization take his reporting. He said in yesterdays episode that he thinks they offered marte the extension because of his interview with mish where he said he wanted to stay but hadn't yet gotten an offer. But all in all mish is by far the best guy reporting on this team, not that that is an accomplishment with the complete lack of insiders among guys around the club.

Obviously I know nothing about their actual thinking, but I would be absolutely stunned if rogers got dealt. IF there is a guy in the current rotation who goes, it to me would seem to be pablo. Rogers seems to be the clear #1 out of the group as of now, Sandy is like the perfect #2 and if Meyer or Sixto or Cabrera can become top of the rotation level you would be hard pressed to find a better #3 in the league.

Pablo to me just seems like gallen's situation, although obviously gallen had full team control whereas pablo has 3 years left after this year. I just view Pablo's ceiling as more of a mid rotation guy rather than a top of the rotation guy and I think his numbers this year might be able to help us find a team overpay for him and treat him as a #2 type guy for a stretch run. Dodgers make too much sense for him.

                            • just saw the mets lost last night so with the split we actually picked up a .5 game in the division to get to 8.5 back. Not gonna do it though, at this point they need to be taking advantage of division games and especially doubleheaders.

You’re probably right. And Rogers has been their best pitcher. But does he keep it up? I think they need to have a good feeling that he will, or his value may never be as high as it is right now.
