A great broadcast puts you at the game - draws a picture of the field and everything that's going on there. It makes you want to be there! Dave Van Horne can no longer do that at age 80. He makes you wonder where you are because, sadly, he's no longer certain where he is. Aging sucks, but we can't get around it. My father lived in another world during his final years, and may have even found some amusement there. Our family loved him more than ever ... but we certainly no longer listened to him. We were satisfied to remember what he used to do and used to say.

Keeping Dave on the air is not doing him a favor or showing respect for his past body of work. It's doing the opposite. And it certainly isn't developing interest in the Marlins.

Note: Jarlin the Former Marlin with the W for the Giants last night. He's thrown two innings with a total of 12 pitches this spring. No hits or walks and three K's. Just noticed that over 19 innings of spring training appearances in his brief career, Jarlin has never yielded a run.
this seems like wreckless speculation about van horne. the guy isnt senile he's just not a good announcer anymore. I personally was never really a fan of him.

    • Wreckless? I listened to the last couple broadcasts. He confuses player names, loses multiple pitches in nearly every ab, and repeats himself. I predict that he will be replaced before the regular season begins.

id be willing to bet a substantial amount of money that he wont unless he quits. He's been this way for years now. he's just not a good announcer and they need to give geffner the full time gig. What is their time sharing schedule like btw? I know there is some sort of plan that they have but i dont listen to baseball games on the radio because that's equivalent to watching paint dry.

random but the more i look at yimi garcia, the more i think he becomes our closer at some point this year. This is a blast from the past but he reminds me a lot of edward mujica when he was here. Prone to hr's so his ERA isn't in the 2's but low whip due to great control and not allowing many walks. That is my favorite kind of reliever. He was a little bit more higher profile than nick anderson was before we got him for schales but i could see a similar ascent as a guy who could get us a piece at the deadline as a good bullpen arm for cheap, although he is just on a one year deal whereas anderson was under team control for years. But given his small salary he could have a much bigger market than some other highly paid relievers who might be available.

In terms of our prospects, I think AAA will be

        C- Wallach/Lavarnway
        1b- Lewin
2b- Organizational fillers like eddy alvarez
        SS- Jazz
        3b- Dunand
        OF- Monte, Sanchez, Brian Miller
SP- Sixto, Neidert, Dugger, Guzman, Poteet

AA rotation- Cabrera, Garrett, Rogers, Holloway, Stewart
A+ rotation- Mejia, Puckett, Soriano, Walters, and then a filler.
A rotation- Fitterer, Palacios, Givin, Mokma

        AA OF- VVM, Bleday, Pompey
        A+ OF- Scott, Misner, Jerar
A OF- Burdick, VM Jr., Orr

I think Gatoh and Alvarez hold down 2nd and 3rd in AAA. They'll be the go-to guys if Berti or Rojas go down early in the season. Cabrera, every indication I've seen is he's headed to AAA, and I think it's the right move. I actually think Dugger finds a way to make the big league club, most likely as long reliever. I think with what Jerar's doing in the spring he's gotta be headed for AA. Pompey I think maybe they try him at 1st Base at AA. Having Burdick back at Clinton is the most baffling thing here. I mean what more do you want the guy to do at Clinton? He might've been the best hitter in the entire league while he was there last year. He'll start at Jupiter, and since I have Jerar going to AA that makes sense. I hope you're right about VM Jr. I think that's a toss-up what they do with him.

Also, you forgot Josh Roberson, who will IMO be the best Pitching Prospect in the Jupiter rotation.

Ya i hope they challenge VM Jr but i could see a scenario where we have so many outfielders and he's still so young that they wait for those short season teams.

and shit you're right about roberson. I'm sure there are a few others ive missed too.

            • Lots of chatter about Burdick on the back fields at Jupiter. He rakes and exudes confidence. He's much more advanced than Scott or Misner. He'll be batting third for the Hammerheads to start the season and I'd hunch that he's in Jacksonville by mid-season.

I'm super excited to see him this year and whether or not he can keep up what he showed last year. And it's not just a hardcore marlins fan thing where we like him but he's not a legit prospect, i've heard a lot of national guys saying he's a legit prospect moving forward.

They are gonna have an OF crunch. I'd guess pompey becomes the odd man out and moves to 1b but im also interested to see what they do with Burdick, VM JR, and Jerar. I think misner and Scott are locks to start in jupiter, so does Burdick get that last spot? I think it's kind of pushing it to put jerar in AA given he had just 253 ab's in Jupiter and he struggled there.

Id guess the OF situation ends up in the unlikely event that there are no injuries like this:

                AAA- Monte, Miller, Sanchez
AA- Bleday, VVM, Jerar with pompey splitting time with alonso at 1b.
A+- Scott, Burdick, Misner with evan edwards at 1b.
                A- VM Jr., Orr, filler

but in all likelihood someone gets injured and it becomes an easier decision.

                • I’m not sure if he ends up closing, but I do think Yimi Garcia will be our best reliever this year. I hope he doesn’t end up closing because that’d likely mean that Kintzler sucked.

I like Yimi Garcia as well, and he will benefit from spacious Marlin Park. I'll be watching Boxberger as too. His velocity appears to be back to what is was at Tampa Bay.

Lee, I've been saying the same thing about Dave for the last 3-4 years. He's soooooo slow calling the games and missing everything that it takes a Glenn inning to figure out what happened.

When we were looking for a TV crew I tried to pitch Glenn. In my opinion he's the best Marlins broadcaster. He has the emotion, the knowledge, the experience.

definitely agree about geffner being our best broadcaster. He's very underutilized but he's definitely the most knowledgable about the organization as a whole. Severino feels like an infomercial for the team every time i watch. And that's coming from me. I'd like to see a three man booth for home games with tommy in there. im sure he doesnt want to travel anymore all year but he's at the home games anyways.

is it? I had read the complete opposite. his fastball speed last year was by far the lowest of his career.

Boxberger worked out with Driveline this offseason and apparently has his velocity back.

Great broadcasting requires thorough preparation. The old guy just doesn't do it. He had to listen to the public address announcer give all the lineup changes before he could report them! Fact is, all that is available from the teams before the game starts. The managers already have the changes planned and the broadcasters should have them beforehand.

I listened to a radio broadcast of a Vanderbilt/Hawaii game last night. I presume the play-by-play was performed by Vanderbilt students ... and it was fantastic. Having done some broadcasting in my younger days (high school basketball and baseball) I have a real appreciation for all the work that goes into it. You are certainly right about Glenn. He does a fine job.

Yes. It's just like Caleb Smith. His repertoire works well when his fastball is at 93, like at the beginning of last season. When he came back after his injury, his velocity was gone and thus his effectiveness. He was at 89-90 yesterday, and that will never work, especially since he throws everything up in the zone.

Christian Yelich (Diaz, Brinson and Harrison) back in the Miami lineup today vs. minor league pitcher for Baltimore.

I kind of want to turn Caleb into a high volume reliever - sooner rather than later. He probably needs to start for 2-3 months and see what happens, but he may just be better out of the pen.

Caleb, Rogers, Vesia, and Tarpley coming out of the bullpen at some TBD future date sounds pretty great to me. They have these guys for years.

Match that with Guzman/Sixto/Cabrera (one of the 3 of them will be a reliever), a TBD second righty, Brigham (I like him as a 3rd right hander right now, he was really good and nasty to end the year), and whoever win the Hernandez/Dugger/Holloway/Mejia/Roberson shuffle.

That could be a ridiculously balanced bullpen, and ignores trade assets. I'd stop complaining about lefties if they did that.

This makes the longterm rotation Sandy, Sixto, Cabrera, Garret, Pablo/Neidert, or ideally replace the later with an expensive free agent 1/2 ace in 1-2 years and maybe they grab Hancock with pick # 3 and one Sixto/Cabrera moves to the pen to make this staff just ridiculous on paper.

                              Anyways.
