Nah, it's more about eating the contract for prospects.

I really question this obsession/notion (not by you, by management) that signing these latin players will suddenly make Miamians flock to the ballpark. I get the logic of it, and think it'll help to an extent. But I just hate when people argue "sign Latin player X and attendance will jump!"

I know that's not what you're saying, I'm just talking in more of a general sense. That said, with Puig interest seemingly non-existent, I'm not opposed to signing him.

He's our captain, good role model for younger guys, pretty much the "face of the franchise" at this moment even tho he's not even close to being our best player.

I get the attendance talks, but if feels like no one in this board went more than 3-4 games last year. I went to over 20 in 2017, 18, 19. Attendance was MUCH better in 19 than in 17. Loria had wildly inflated numbers.

In addition to that, even when Stanton was close to 60 homers no one would come. Let's not forget how he used to choke up on big moments.

But, yes, I agree that on a board that is made up of diehards, it seems like the vast majority of this board doesn’t make it to more than 3 or 4 games a year.
I admit, I've only been to about 4 games over 2018 and 2019. Call me a bandwagoner or whatever, but I haven't had that draw to attend when I know the team isn't competitive - i.e. the game won't be entertaining if we're getting blown out.

Another factor is people to go with. I work close to the park and certainly could go to more weeknight games, but I don't like going by myself all the time (I'll do it some, but it's more fun with someone else there with you). Conversely on the weekend, unless friends want to go, I'm not necessarily inclined to drive down there for a game (considering I drive down that way 5 days a week). They're casual fans at best, so a competitive team would entice them more to go.

I also liked hearing Sherman mention that they want Palm Beach and Broward people to come - obviously that's a no duh thing they need to do, but it's seemed to be all Miami focused. I like the partnerships with Brightline to get people there, I just wish there were a better way to get from Brightline to the park.

I live 8-10 miles south of you and I’d never dream of taking I-95 the whole way down to Marlins Park. That would be stressful indeed.

If you want to make a once a year trip to Marlins Park to hear the crack of the bat in person I highly recommend the Turnpike to the I-95 Express Lanes. And to add to that, arrive 90 minutes before first pitch; traffic around the ballpark is substantially better at that time.

I got a 10 game weekend pack for 3 people this season for $376 out the door (Section 40). That includes Opening Day. And $3 Nathan’s hot dogs (that taste better than the $7 hot dogs when Darth Loria owned the team).

NOTE: I got a FREE year long subscription to MLB TV for 2020 when I bought my 10 game pass. I believe that normally costs like $100-$130.
That doesn't sound like a bad deal, especially given you can wander around to other sections too if you want. I might have to look into that. I could look into weekdays too, as I work close to the park.

    • Villar with a walk and SB to start the game. Good to see. You got what you wanted Lee. (I think)

DVH in mid-season form already, I have no idea what's happening. Ok Geff just explained what happened. Cardinals trying to pick Villar off at 2nd and fail miserably 2 errors and Villar scores.

      • Berti having a rough inning defensively at 2nd. Cardinals up 2-1.

Nick Neidert facing the teeth of St. Louis' lineup this should be interesting.

        • Ya Dave van horn needs to go and geffner needs to take over full time already

We can do that right after we fix the fact that our two tv announcers sound exactly fucking alike

          • Retires Carpenter and Goldschmidt, Molina with a single. Geff indicating that Neidert's getting squeezed a little by the ump. Lee's boy Brad Miller doubles off of Dickerson's glove in left, a leaping catch was attempted apparently. Edman grounds out to 1st to end the inning, runners left on 2nd and 3rd.

            • 2 scoreless innings for Neidert. Gave up 4 hits, but 2 of those were very soft bloopers, also eliminated one of those hits with a pickoff in what Geffner described as a very good pick-off move.

              • Anderson HBP on the guard he is wearing to protect his hand. Lifted for pinch runner.

Geffner indicated that he didn't seem injured, and was going to be pulled for a pinch-runner regardless.

Looked like a precaution. He didn't seem to be in pain.

                      Easy 1-2-3 inning for Rogers.

Brian Miller triples. Marlins first hit of the game.

JJ Bleday, another hit against a lefty, ties up the game at 3-3.

NOTE! Neidert threw nothing but fastballs in his first outing, working solely on location. Not a single change (his best pitch). I'd love to see him make starting rotation. Rogers was very good! Eveld fastballs at 91 mph. Sandy was all over the place with his fastball. It tails so much that hitters just take it, knowing it will be well off the plate. Nice hit by Austin Dean ... I think he'll make the Cardinal 26-man.

On the college talent front, I wish the Marlins could swing a trade for all the current Vanderbilt starting pitchers. Also, here is web address for live broadcast of Arizona State vs New Mexico State game tomorrow night. 6:30 MST (8:30 pm our time) if anyone would enjoy watching. https://pac-12.com/live/arizona-state-university

                              • Just watched the interview Jeter did with MLB Network. First Marlins related interview hes done I think where he didn't come off as a tone deaf dick. Said the right things. Looking for improvement. Fanbase has been through a lot, trying to earn back the trust. Looking to win at all levels of the organization, build a winning culture. So maybe he's getting better as well.
