The two young guys Boston got are really good.... but Mookie also is awesome and comes with a qualifying pick worst case scenario. Dumping Price is good, but like Wil Myers, he is not worthless so the Dodgers are getting something there.
I guess we'll see.

They can stockpile talent (which they are) and field a competitive team at the same time. Getting the 8th versus 4th pick in the draft isn't going to change any trajectory of this franchise. So there isn't pool money for the next Mokma ot Fitterer? Who cares? Those are good prospects, but showing the fan base you care is FAR more valuable.
I think they are doing this right now too BTW, but I can't agree with "Fans keep acting like 2020 means something but it doesn't."
All I am saying is fans seem to think they are playing for something in 2020 but in reality the FO is gonna be happy with #4 Pick,no long term injuries and prospects improved ready for ML
Totally agree with u about Myers by way. Marlins can take his contract and get prospects that lets SD do something big. Send them someone with options and a Pompey back

We're still dealing with the pain of the Chen contract, and some want to repeat it with Myers? The only certain result is that payroll gets inflated. No prospects would be coming back that are anywhere near a sure thing.
I'd say Boston did very well in getting Verdugo for one year of Betts at $27M. The Red Sox failed to reach the playoffs last year and had no budget or prospects to make acquisitions. Verdugo is damn good. Take a look at his rookie year vs. that of Betts ... not bad. Young stars that play for minimum wage and have five years of team control are invaluable.

Myers has some value, unlike Chen. We likely wouldn't be taking on the entire contract. To pretend that Myers=Chen is stupid.

And even with as bad of a contract as Chen's is. It hasn't really stopped us from doing anything. We still have the lowest payroll in the majors despite that big stupid contract. Only thing it stopped us from doing is being able to possibly get anything in return for him. If this were a time where we were having to try to re-sign young superstars, yes that contract would be debilitating, but it's not. So what do you do when you have about $30 million to spend before your payroll even becomes respectable? Well if your this FO it seems like the answer is nothing, but a smart FO that wasn't afraid to spend money would use that capital to take on bad contracts and bring in young talent along with those contracts. Then when those contracts are off the board hopefully that coincides with the time that you do start having to try to keep young talent around.

Myers .825 ops vs LHP last 2 seasons, and around .780 for his career.
Expensive? Sure. But if you get 2-3 young guys, and SD throws in $10-20 million, that's a deal.

Nick is right - it wouldn't stop Miami from doing anything, especially of all money SD chips in is for 21/22 and not this season

It's
Mookie (and not getting a qualifying pick), Price, $48 million
for
Verdugo and Graterol (cap savings of approx. $90 million)
That's a little skeptical on my hot take

Solid summary article of prospect arms by Barry Jackson - https://www.miamiherald.com/sports/s...link=mainstage
TLDR:
Sandy - Marlins and some scouts believe he has the stuff to be a high impact 1/2 SP
Caleb - They bypassed trades for him and hope he'll get back to pre-injury form
Pablo - Had mental issues last year after injury explaining dip in production
Yamamoto - Probably a 5 if anything
Hernandez - Likes his upside, would prefer him in rotation over Urena
Dugger - Backup rotation option
Urena - Going to bullpen, and backup SP option if above guys don't figure it out
Sixto - Changed mechanics and he personally feels great, expects to be up soon
Neidert - Could be mid/back end SP
Cabrera - Some in organization thinks he can be as good as Sixto, impact 1/2 SP potential
Guzman - "Raised eyebrows" with second half, and still working as a starter
Holloway - Marlins think his stuff a lot better than stats
Garrett - Looking like a 2021 debut, throwing only 90-93
Rogers - Took a major step forward last year, late 2020, early 2021 debut anticipated
Mejia - Could debut in 2021 if it clicks right
This is a nice spread. Going to be fun to see this sort itself out.
Ideally hopefully mostly everyone works out so they can do another Gallen trade and still have 7+ longterm options to work with.
