If u have to give up a draft pick u also have to give up draft pool $. Draft picks means nothing but losing 2 million dollars from pool hurts especially since they see this is last big draft year. If they would have had to last draft then NO Misner,Fitterer and Mokma
I agree its weird but I understand the thinking. I think it has more to do with the depth in the system than anything. Next offseason they HAVE to add Devers/Brian Miller/Jerar/Garrett/Rogers/Soriano/Palacios/Stevens/Aiello plus others like FA they get. They are offering 3/4 prospect packages all over(Cubs,Boston,Lindor) and see if someone bites
A big focus this offseason seems to be find guys who are NOT Rule 5 eligible as they are aware its gonna be tough decisions coming up
They are actually dying to add ANOTHER draft pick somehow(can't until Dec/Jan) and its NOT for the pick. They want that extra draft pool $$$. Just like if Emerson Hancock is around at #3 they might pass and grab Cole Wilcox or JT Ginn. The FO especially Greenlee love JT Ginn(Spin Rate better than our best ML guy now) and if he gives them a deal that lets them save 1.5 million I could see them take him. The more draft pool $$ the more BPA they can take. Take JT Ginn at #3 save 1.5 and if a HS guy falls to Rd 4 or 5 because of bonus they can afford him now

I'm not here to say that draft picks don't matter, but I think it's misguided for the Marlins to shy away from signing a good player that will be in his prime, and helping this team to contend when they're aiming to do so in a couple of years because they'd have to give up a (non 1st round) draft pick.
Trade
Cabrera-#3 Pick SP Hancock OR JT Ginn(Same age and probably ranked higher)
Jose Devers-Round 2S Pick SS/3B Yohandy Morales but have Jazz/Torres/Nunez/Osiris/Dalvy/Salas/Cappe at SS
Jerar-Rd 2 Pick a college bat who is same exact age but have Bleday/Misner/Burdick/Connor Scott
Ya draft is a crapshoot but what I mean is its not like u are trading guys that can be replaced very easily
So u trade a SP,OF,SS who have to be on 40 man and in First 3 picks for 2020 draft u take SP,OF/Bat,SS who are same age or younger/maybe better and don't have to be on 40 man for 4/5 years plus u get a bat like Lindor,Betts,Bryant,Lourdes,Peralta whomever
Please note I like Cabrera,Devers and Jerar ALOT but fact is not alot of room for them on ML team unless improveLast edited by tjfla; 11-13-2019, 12:09 PM.

Let's agree on something. The only "untouchables" on the Marlins AND in their system are Chisholm (gave up our best starter for him), S. Sanchez, and Edward Cabrera. If somebody wants Alcantara, C Smith, or Pablo, fine, but the three I mentioned are most likely to be star players. You don't trade a future star for two years of a current star.

I suppose if you do acquire one of these big names for a year, and they don't want to agree to an extension after trying all offseason/throughout the season, you could always trade them at the deadline too. A guy of that caliber would still be worth a lot at the deadline for a team that needs a bat, and might be willing to overpay/recoup what you gave up.

I am in the camp of this strategy
2019 offseason-Castellanos/SP 1 yr plus option/few vets
2020 offseason-Go crazy and try for Betts
2021 offseason-If Miss on Betts go even crazier for Lindor
I wouldn't trade any prospects for anyone. Keep drafting BPA,spend all of the IFA cash, bring prospects along slow and spend big in FA

Don't get me wrong. I would go after Lindor, and maybe take a chance on a Bryant or Betts. I'd try to get an extension agreed upon, but depending on the return, I'd think about taking a chance. I just don't understand the line of thinking that they'd be willing to do that, but not willing to give up a draft pick.

And yes, I think Jazz is untouchable. He's one player that Jeter targeted personally after seeing him play in the Arizona Fall League in 2018.Last edited by Lee Stone; 11-13-2019, 12:54 PM.
