2022-2023 Offseason Thread

Give me Arraez and Lewis from the Twins and I'm happy. Throw in a reliever or whatever to get it done like lou said.

I'm just not sure Kepler helps us, unless he can somehow man CF for 120 games a season and provide at least average defense. If he's just a corner OF/DH, we have about 8 candidates, none of which we're completely sold on, and he just adds to that list.

He can play CF for all right handers and would be a big, but not significant, upgrade. You just gotta bench him on lefty starters.

The issue is just still, where else are you getting massive production and all roads lead to Reynolds.

I could get behind so many things from the Twins - including Kepler, Polanco (Jazz to SS as the rumblings say), and Martin (the forgotten maybe CF with enormous upside) - if combined with the larger Reynolds move and say.... they have been linked to Profar.

This team would hit:

Fortes, Stallings (Doesn't matter)
Cooper (110 games, all lefties half righties) and Profar (50 games)
Polanco (RHP), Profar (LHP)
Jazz (RHP), Segura (LHP)
Segura and some Berti (RHP), Berti ( LHP)
Reynolds (Always)
Kepler (RHP), DLC (LHP)
Garcia and some DLC (RHP), Garcia LHP
Soler and some DLC (RHP), Soler LHP


Ditch Pablo, Scott, and Wendle to Minnesota for those 3 and payroll is up $1.5m. You probably get another prospect from Minnesota also. Reynolds and Bednar would add another $8m. Profar $10. It's a $100m team I think. Huge platoon split advantages and depth once you add Martin, Groshans, Amaya, Edwards, and some of Bleday/Sanchez/Jerar/Burdick. Still have 5 SP + Eury and at least one of Eder/Meyer. And Sixto. And likely Fulton.


Just saying. A lot of options. I'm not sure if I like Martin, but I don't hate him. It might be worth a huge bet here he will hit in a year. Deal with his defense later.

So yea, the Twins are great. So many options, but its still all about Bryan.

Cooper and Wendle agreed about where they should have landed in arbitration. They gave Wendle a few extra probably and wondering if that was a good faith gesture to try and extend a year after this similar to how they tac'd on years to Rojas here and there. Guess we'll see.

It's probably $90-92m for this right now, pending club controlled tenders and arbitration numbers for Stallings, Luzardo, Chargois, Scott, and Okert.

TBH I love the pitching staff ignoring they need to upgrade two of Groshans, Bleday, and Sanchez pretty badly, and ideally all three.

Profar, Reynolds, R. Lewis, and Bednar (plus adding in Nance/Castano) would be totally perfect to swap in for Groshans, Bleday, Sanchez (those three optioned to AAA or moved), Pablo (Lewis), and Rogers/Cabrera (Reynolds), etc. We can hope.

*Just saw Scott came in at $2.8m, so it's going to be closer to $91-92m range for that above as looks like the guys are getting on the higher end of the scale so far. Maybe they will shave a little here with Stallings, but the Pablo case could be interesting if he goes for it.

I mention this as Miami Herald/Roster Resources have thrown out incorrect numbers, unless the Herald was projecting they expect the team to spend just over $100m in payroll. Which frankly I hope is the case and they have some inside information they have another $10m to spend.

id have strongly considered nontendering both Stallings and Scott at those numbers. Especially scott. He's horrific. Never had a WHIP lower than 1.56 other than the year he threw 20 innings in the shortened 2020 season. Stallings might be OK if he has a bounceback year and any quality backup/part time catcher probably goes for that amount. I just hate his bat so much.

I think you keep both of them. Look at what guys like Austin Hedges ($5m) are getting from non-contenders. Stallings is actually cheaper and arguably a better bounce back candidate as he (somehow) has a better bat.

Scott has awesome peripherals - https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savan...r-pitching-mlb. If he can harness any control he becomes a borderline ace reliever. Ordinary solid RPs are getting $7m bucks a year in FA, so another one where he's actually really cheap plus a solid bet. Yes I know that's the problem, the control/walks, but if he has a 4 BB/9 year (not asking for too much here), he's going to throw a sub 3 ERA easily. 2020 is a good example. Decrease in walks and a little HR luck and he was a 1.5+ WAR reliever very quickly. Scott's issue is he is miscast as "the closer." He's the 4th/5th reliever in a good bullpen opening day. That being said, I do think Bleier/Scott are moveable to save a few dollars, Okert has the same profile as Scott so they are effectively the same pitcher, and I'd be comfortable with Castano as the 3rd lefty in the pen to open, or maybe Nardi/Simpson beats him out. Scott's a good throw-in for this reason. A guy with huge upside as a 5th option in a bullpen, like Minnesotas. That's smart for them, etc.

It would be really great if they could do something like:

Pablo and move out massive minor leaguers for bat upgrades, sign Profar as a stopgap, etc. That staff is FUN if they can pull out Reynolds for the farm system, etc.

Ill believe it when i see it with him. He hasnt pitched in 2 years. He should be counted on only as a potential pleasant surprise, he's lost the benefit of the doubt to put any reliance on him ever being healthy again.

Kim Ng is apparently meeting with Gurriel right now at his home in miami according to a cuban reporter. He should be super cheap coming off a down year. He's not good defensively but as a super cheap contract as a 1b/DH option or if they have confidence in his ability to bounce back, as the option at 1b if they trade Cooper, i like it. He seems to be like Garcia in that he has a bad year followed by a good year every year. From his first full year in 2017 on, his war has been 2.2, 1.7, 3.9, 0.0, 3.3, -.9. His 2 best years have been 2021 and 2019, 2 worst years have been the shortened 2020 season and last year. He won the batting title 2 years ago, and like many of the other players we've shown interest in, he does not strike out. Career K percentage of 11.2%. Would like it as another option behind Cooper at 1b and Soler at DH.

which sucks, because like ive said before, he was fucking filthy in that 2020 year when he made his debut. But the thing with him all his career has been will he be able to stay healthy. So far the answer is a resounding no.
