They still have to prove they can get a deal across the line, though.
I am going to keep beating the drum here, he is insanely valuable, there is no desperation, and they should hold him unless they get exactly what they want.

He is at best 4th though (DeGrom, Verlander, Rodon). Assuming those guys are in fact really available.

I guess I should have said via trade.

        Yea but they all count.

        What's better.

5/$125 for Rodon in free agency. He's going to be 30 with a big injury history and 850 IP of mileage. Upside of course is tremendous.

        or

5/$80 for Pablo via an extension, losing a good FV55/50, FV 50/45+, and FV40 prospect (maybe getting a throw in from Marlins also) via trade. He's going to be 27, with less injuries, and only has pitched 510 innings. You'd also have money for a $6-8m a year player for 5 years on top of this.

It's hard to say. Pablo may in fact be the smarter acquisition here assuming that centerpiece prospect isn't a real overpay for a team. And the thing is, after Rodon this analysis becomes a clear winner for Pablo against James Taillon/Martin Perez who are presumably next best.

Insanely valuable right now in a world Mike Clevinger/Zach Eflin are about to get $10m deals for 1-2 years.

It keeps getting worse. Imagine trading Sandy and not getting a sure-fire CF and SS.

At least click over to Arizona and get us a CF Lee. It's the least you can do while we mock every one of these.

Now you're talking. High floor defender who jacks with a low BABIP? Don't see them moving him for a SP (they have arms), but sure. Figure out how to get him.

                • What the point in trading Payton Henry? Not a world beater but very serviceable guy.

also John Jay is now our 1B coach

I assume they can replace a 3rd catcher pretty easily and this was opportunistic as they liked the prospect. They did get Henry for effectively free and all. Maybe they think Banfield/McIntosh can get called up if there is an issue.

I'm more perplexed as to why Brazoban, Brigham(A), Castano(OOO), Hernandez(A-2), Devers, and L. Diaz(OOO) are still on the 40 man. Looks like RuleV draft is Dec. 7th so they have some time to maneuver things around, but you'd imagine they want to protect Soriano and Simpson at a minimum versus these guys who have low shots of making the team.

Or is the idea Elisier and Castano are going to live in the pen and be the de facto 6/7 SP and they throw out....

Sandy, Luzardo, Cabrera, Rogers, Garrett (we'll just trade Pablo for bats here)
                    _____, Floro, Elisier*, Brigham
                    Bleier, Scott, Okert, Castano

I guess this works if there is high confidence Eury/Eder/Fulton are throwing some real innings in the summer, or maybe Sixto and Neidert are stretched out in AAA for injuries.

*Todd don't get mad here - *they* haven't DFA'd/traded him

Cartaya could be an All Star catcher and ready to start this season. Pages plays CF AND has a big bat. Given the severe lack of overall hitting, a CF with pop is important. Busch brings a great bat at 2B and allows Jazz to move to SS. Vargas could be an option at 3B.

                      • BA new top 10

                        Eury
                        Meyer
                        Berry
                        Salas
                        Cappe
                        Sixto
                        Eder
                        Fulton
                        Burdick
                        Groshans

Can't link as paywall. Saw Frisario comment to someone on whats left of Twitter that it should be Eury, Cappe, then whoever else. Not sure he is right there, but he talks to the organization so they must love him which is great. Fangraphs has Sixto 13, and even MLB 11. I'm not sure if this is a compliment and they do think the health will get behind him, or Eder/Fulton are whatever because Sixto is currently, whatever.

I'd kick out Sixto and Burdick and add Watson and Mack after Fulton, but that's about it.

Pages projected for a corner longterm. It's stop gap for a year or two and they'd still need a CF.

Busch is extremely likely a 1B, especially for this team.

Jazz isn't a SS. He's great. Don't mess with him.

Vargas will play 3B for sure.

Cartaya sure, could be a lot of things.

This is a really dumb one Lee. Head on over to Arizona and get them a play-now CF. That's where you start.

                          • Joc got a qualifying offer of $19m.

Marlins have no chance of competition if he is a $19m/year player.
