Do you think there is a difference between a 4.5WAR player who hits .775 OPS/great defender or .875 OPS/poor defender? Both are 4.5 WAR in this. Is one better? Everyone is 28 and all things equal with the contract.
2) Defensive value is much more subjective and subject to variance than offensive value on a year to year basis. Kind of like how you penciled in Stallings for 2-3 war based on defensive value and I told you he couldn't hit his way out of a wet paper bag and this year he grades negatively defensively and has a negative WAR. Offensive value is much more easily quantifiable, and I'll take the two players whose 4th or 5th best year would be Swanson's career year this year offensively.
3) Paying 20 million+ a year for 4+ years for defensive value is idiotic. Again, he has graded out as an above average hitter 2 times in 7 years in an unbelievable lineup and you're once again suggesting to buy high off of a career year. He comes here and his OPS will be around .750 and he'll put up 2-3 WAR. He is a good, but not special hitter. you're penciling him in for 4.5+ WAR when this year, in a contract year, is the first time he;s been anywhere near there, and again, it's coming surrounded by Acuna, Albies, Ozuna, Olson, Contreras, and Riley. He's not a bad player, but if you bring him here, based on our track record, his offensive numbers will go down in our ballpark and our lineup.
bottom line is this lineup needs a cornerstone star to pair with Jazz and whoever they get for Pablo long term and hopefully bleday and eventually berry.Last edited by fish16; 08-02-2022, 01:22 PM.

top prospect but down year for Groshans. It's a change of scenery hope for the best move for a former top prospect having a down year for 2 decent bullpen arms. His power has disappeared though. We seem to make trades with only the Blue Jays, Rays

However I do agree the team needs to SCORE runs and not just PREVENT them. However, you buy what is undervalued in the marketplace ala Billy Beane. Take what you can get.
I LOVE the Groshans return for two relievers. I like Pop but he can be replaced.

As down as I’ve been on Ng, she deserves credit here. Getting a top 100 prospect for a couple of relievers, neither of them being a closer, or really even a set-up man, is good work. If she can now do the same with Pablo and/or Cooper, we could maybe start giving her more benefit of the doubt.

The pessimistic view here would be that you’re getting a guy whose hitting has dipped a bit this year, and putting him in an organization that hasn’t been able to develop hitters. But you weren’t getting a slam dunk prospect for these players, and where the organization is, you want a guy like this who’s close over a lower level guy that may eventually have a higher upside.
