  • Jeter also apparently said Avisail can be the CF and they want another OF but doesn't have to be CF. Not a huge fan of that plan.

      Nope, me neither.

I imagine this is them publicly saying this to give the impression to other teams/agents they are not desperate for a CF. I think we all can agree, no one is buying that, but it's the right thing to say.

But if I'm wrong and they are OK with a Garcia/DLC/I guess Berti platoon in CF, holy smokes. Get Jazz out there even if it's comical to hope for the best, and play Wendle in the IF.

        • I don't know, they spent the entirety of 2021 trying to make Burdick and Bleday into Center Fielders. Not that I think they were wrong to, but I'm seeing a pattern of this FO believing you don't necessarily need a burner out there in center.

This isn't just them saying it in public, though. Mish believes that's the plan as well, and he's been as plugged in as it gets. Maybe he's part of the misinformation thing, too, but it does make sense when you look at the scarcity of good CF with control that are actually available. You have a better chance at getting a really good corner guy, and finding a way to put one of the corner guys in center. I do like the idea of Jazz out there, though, if they're really not going to add a CF.

            • Maybe I missed this, but Avisail has an option? It's 4/$53 or 5/$60

$12 per year, and then $5/$12 in 2026

This makes it a bit better to spread out some cash into a 5th year, and if he's good, you have him for another

              • Just to expand on the Garcia to CF thing, Aram Leighton responded to that saying it only made sense to say that as a leverage tactic (essentially what Lou said), and Mish said that's not what's happening, and that they think Garcia can play CF.

                • they have a lot more confidence in avisail garcia on both sides of the ball than I do.

He's apparently donating 120k per year to the Marlins' charity too.

I think Garcia can play CF too.... 30-40 times a year in predominantly smaller away ballparks, and if he has to move over in-game for any injury concerns (it's going to be a real trip having a DH and worrying much less about double switches, etc.). It's a smokescreen. They are going to get a CF.

You should look at his statcast rates. Minimum 150 PA, Barrels (84%), Exit Velocity (77%), Sweet Spot (78%), Hard Hit (83%). He hits the ball very hard and is a plus athlete. It's a really solid profile and he has a nice BB/K/BABIP profile where there is nothing to suggest this goes away soon. The only problem with him is guaranteeing a corner OF a 4th year, but he's a very solid player. If he can actually play decent CF, he's a borderline star.

Also since I was on the page.... Brandon Marsh - Barrels (77%) Exit Velocity (92%), Sweet Spot (99%), Hard Hit (93%). We obviously can hate on his .403 BABIP and 35% K rate from 2021, but he was a rookie and is blasting things he hits. Major upside here, but I mean we know that being a top 20 overall prospect. They should be looking how to get him, and then combine him with a veteran FA to ease him in.

I hope you're right, but I wouldn't count on it. At least if Mish is to be taken at face value. I'm not sure who's out there that they're going to get in CF that fills their need for a big bat, and is controllable. Reynolds isn't going to be moved, and it doesn't seem like they're in on Mullins.

                          • Passan is reporting that Chris Taylor and the Dodgers are making progress towards a deal. So that's probably the last available good CF.

Mullins wasn't very good in CF last year, nor was Reynolds, so I'm not sure either is even a longterm CF target. They probably are corner OFs longterm. To note, Avisail is actually better defensively lately in CF than both of them, but the caveat is there is a way less sample size (roughly a third) over his 350 innings in CF in 2020/2021. I'm out on Mullins personally. I don't believe in his bat at the levels he showed last year. I would take Reynolds as I believe in his bat and will suffer through CF defense a year or three until a better decision is made.

I like the idea of Ketel to eventually move him to the IF (I believe in his bat), or go get a Marsh type prospect who profiles as a plus defender and can hit and hope for the best. Pablo Lopez/Max Meyer are really good. Someone has this player somewhere for those arms.

Or, think outside the box - Cleveland likely is going to suck and Myles Straw was awesome last year. The Marlins definitely have prospects to get him. It's not the banger some of you want, but he's pretty good, versatile for the future, and if you combined him with say not trading Pablo (big), signing Schwarber to DH, and jettisoning Cooper for a reliever arm, that team definitely makes sense on paper.

                              • I just feel like they blew it by being cheap once again. It's not my money but I spend $25 million more over 4 years on Marte over Garcia every single time.
