We had a comparable trade situation in the Realmuto deal. Contreras has two years of control and similar (slightly higher) salary. The Phillies gave up Sixto, Alfaro, and Stewart. Accordingly,, the Marlins would have to give up Cabrera or Bleday as the headliner. Although I wouldn't mind parting with Bleday in such a deal, Cabrera would be completely off the table. I'd prefer to go with numbers ... maybe Garrett or Hernandez, Neidert, Jesus Sanchez, and Jose Devers. While Contreras would be of immediate help, I would regard him more as trade bait for an excellent young catcher with a full six years of control ... like Luis Campusano.

More Mish on a potential Contreras deal:
"If his deal ever happens the Cubs will not be getting anywhere close to JJ Bleday. Names I've heard are not in the Marlins top 10."
Mish is pretty tuned in!! I have heard same thing however should note I dont consider Monte a prospect and have heard Braxton Garrett(Top 10 prospect) OR Elieser names floated
Names I have heard are Breidy/Eury Perez/Both Rodriguez 3B/Alegre/Maycold/Junior Sanchez. This is why I keep mentioning it as 2 DSL prospects

Its like Boston. Miami called heard Bleday or Cabrera and said see ya. Miami called Chicago heard names and talks are ongoing
No suprise but Miami has soured on Monte. They have pushed him in alot of talks this winter

if the cubs want lower level guys we absolutely need to make the deal happen for contreras. It wouldnt affect anything in the next 3 years, keeps our surplus of close to ML ready pitching, and we dont have to part with any of the promising young bats that arent far off. Absolutely need to go for it and maybe even give contreras a 2-3 year extension to keep him under team control for 4-5 years as opposed to 2. His improvement over Alfaro is enormous and would pay huge dividends right away. With alfaro we have a legit bad bottom of the order given that Jazz/Isan might struggle plus other young bats who come up in the year might as well. Adding a legit top 5 catcher with a quality bat really improves not only our ceiling but especially our floor as a lineup.
Alfaro flat out cannot be the starter next year if we have any realistic hopes of being a legit contender.

Phillies signed Archie Bradley to a 1 year $6 million deal. Pretty good price. Hope the Marlins can sign a closer soon. There are still plenty of solid options that can be had for a similar price tag...Mark Melancon, Shane Greene, Trevor Rosenthal, Ian Kennedy, Roberto Osuna, Brandon Workman, and of course Brandon Kintzler and Sergio Romo.

Trade for Contreras.
Sign Joc Pederson
Sign Brad Hand
Sign Mark Melancon
I think you could do that for around a $50 million commitment over the next 2 years. With 2 years of control for each of those guys except maybe just 1 for Melancon. Seems completely doable with how low our payroll is. FO needs to get it done.

i dont see the need for joc pederson but contreras and 2 relievers is a must. that would be a phenomenal offseason. maybe a flier on a very cheap veteran SP option too in order to give some protection to the young arms and to make sure we dont have to rush them

So, I'm saying there's a chance (tiny as it may be).
I’m going to compare Burdick’s budding career to a player who was drafted 26 spots behind Colin Moran in 2013: Aaron Judge.
Judge’s third and final year at Fresno State: 242 PA 12 HR, 36 RBI .369 BA .461 OBP and 1.117 OPS
Burdick’s third and final year at Wright State. 286 PA 15 HR 72 RBI .407 BA .538 OBP and 1.267 OPS
Judge’s 2014 season in A-Ball 278 PA 9 HR 45 RBI .333 BA .428 OBP and .958 OPS
Burdick 2019 season in A-Ball 287 PA 10 HR 59 RBI .307 BA .407 OBP and .950 OPS
You never know.Last edited by Lee Stone; 01-15-2021, 10:46 AM.

And in my view, the only reason they haven't is so MLB can hold that as a bargaining chip in the upcoming CBA negotiations, which is stupid. It's time, just do it.
