    Which Miami prospects actually have "huge significance"? I'd say Cabrera and S Sanchez for sure. I still hold out hope for Jazz to hit, especially since he brings so many other virtues to the field. The guys you have to be willing to bail on are Bleday and J Sanchez. According to baseballtradevalues.com, Bleday's current value is 28.8M. That matches up with the two years of team control left on Contreras. CJ Abrams, the talent that the Marlins passed on to take the college hitter Bleday, has a current BTV of 63.3M! As far as ZIPs prospect rankings go, Bleday doesn't even scratch the top 100 (Sixto, Jazz, Rogers and Garrett are the only Marlins on the list). One more "vanilla" minor league showing for Bleday and he will become Colin Moran 2.0. (Moran became Jarred Cosart by the way.)

    This is why I would package Bleday, J Sanchez, and a couple lower ranked guys for Contreras and switch-hitter Ian Happ. The Marlins would be a much better team.
    the world where he is a .789 OPS in his first 5 years, brought down by a terrible showing in a small sample size last year.

    • my favorite part of this year will be when bleday hits well in his first 2 weeks of the season and lee stone changes his tune entirely because he gets off to small sample sizes.

        I like Bleday very much. Visited with him at the Jupiter complex and he signed baseballs for my two grandsons.

          You seem to not, as you mention trading him in every single scenario you bring up.

          • mish said on twitter last night that they are more in on benintendi than contreras and their main focus right now is a closer. Closer is obviously a need but i dont get the lack of urgency to try and get a contreras deal done. the guy is a top 5 catcher and would be the perfect addition right now. maybe they are waiting on a kris bryant trade or maybe the cubs are just focused on that for the moment but with contreras available it would be a huge mistake not to go out and get him. benintendi is a really good player but we have a ton of OF depth and can make due without him and try to contend this year. I think we will be around .500 this year but i think a contreras replacement for the awful alfaro can really raise the ceiling of not just our lineup but the whole team.

            I still think Contreras and Kimbrel (with the cubs eating a good portion of his salary and hoping for a rebound) for a Rogers/Garrett, Encarnacion, and then lower level guys is really a good deal on both sides.

            • Just hard for me to believe that after benching Alfaro for Chad Freaking Wallach in the playoffs last year, that they'd feel good about going back to Alfaro as the starter next season.

              • Marlins signed Anthony Bass. He had 7 saves for the Blue Jays last season.

                @jonmorosi
                Anthony Bass has agreed to a 2-year deal with the #Marlins that includes a team option for 2023, source says.
                @CraigMish
                was the first to report the deal.
                @MLB

                2 year deal with an option likely indicates he'll be the closer or lead setup man. No word on the price yet.

                  If the Marlins did nothing else, I would say it is not enough. I do like this move considerably and I believe they will add more in the pen from what I understand.

                  • bass is a decent signing. like the team option on the 2nd year. Cant be the closer they are going for though or else that's a let down. Good numbers, looks like according to fangraphs decent peripherals and a fastball at 95 combined with a slider. Good signing, need 1-2 more bullpen arms and contreras and id be satisfied with running it back and letting the arms take a next step and carry us.

                      great to hear. Bass as a closer is not bad and is probably an improvement on kintzler but they need 1 more guy. Whether it's kimbrel in a contreras trade or a free agent guy. There are just too many guys out there as potential bullpen arms and the market is way too low for this to be their only signing. good start though.

                      • Some guys still available- Trevor Rosenthal (who if im not mistaken we signed when he was injured in 2018 but never pitched with us), Alex Colome (would be my choice), Mark Melancon (wouldnt trust him as closer, great set up option though), shane greene, jake mcgee (would love him as a lefty set up option), Joakim Soria (probably my #2 option due to very high floor and proven track record of consistency), Jeremy jeffress, Darren O'Day (my #1 choice as a set up guy, love his side arm, track record of results, and ability to make righties uncomfortable), and of course kintzler is still out there.

                        If we dont go out and get contreras or benintendi i hope we use the money and just spend $15 million for next year to improve the bullpen and go after Colome, O'Day, and Soria/Mcgee and just create a super deep pen that can really come in handy if any of the starters take a step back or if we decide to play it super carefully with young guys like Sixto/Rogers/Cabrera.

                          In a short season, we barely made it in...... so you tell me where's the TV contract ? I'm still waiting on the stadium naming rights these contracts & streams of revenue all should have been signed and ready to go....this is the 4th year of the "rebuild" and really haven't seen any commitment from ownership to anything yet......no commitment, no fans coming to the games...why should they come ? You have made a commitment to only one player - Lewis Brinson. For the life of me, I can't understand why he is still on this roster....he's taking up a space of someone that can really play the game or needs a chance at the very least.

                            • Anthony Bass to the Marlins. Gets a ton of ground balls. Basically a 7.5 K/9 over the last 2 seasons

                                Seems like a slightly better Kintzler. Hopefully more moves to come, I think I'd be fine with him as a set-up man, not so much as closer.
