mish said on twitter last night that they are more in on benintendi than contreras and their main focus right now is a closer. Closer is obviously a need but i dont get the lack of urgency to try and get a contreras deal done. the guy is a top 5 catcher and would be the perfect addition right now. maybe they are waiting on a kris bryant trade or maybe the cubs are just focused on that for the moment but with contreras available it would be a huge mistake not to go out and get him. benintendi is a really good player but we have a ton of OF depth and can make due without him and try to contend this year. I think we will be around .500 this year but i think a contreras replacement for the awful alfaro can really raise the ceiling of not just our lineup but the whole team.
I still think Contreras and Kimbrel (with the cubs eating a good portion of his salary and hoping for a rebound) for a Rogers/Garrett, Encarnacion, and then lower level guys is really a good deal on both sides.

Marlins signed Anthony Bass. He had 7 saves for the Blue Jays last season.
@jonmorosi
Anthony Bass has agreed to a 2-year deal with the #Marlins that includes a team option for 2023, source says.
@CraigMish
was the first to report the deal.
@MLB
2 year deal with an option likely indicates he'll be the closer or lead setup man. No word on the price yet.Last edited by fauowls44; 01-22-2021, 09:30 AM.

If the Marlins did nothing else, I would say it is not enough. I do like this move considerably and I believe they will add more in the pen from what I understand.

bass is a decent signing. like the team option on the 2nd year. Cant be the closer they are going for though or else that's a let down. Good numbers, looks like according to fangraphs decent peripherals and a fastball at 95 combined with a slider. Good signing, need 1-2 more bullpen arms and contreras and id be satisfied with running it back and letting the arms take a next step and carry us.

Some guys still available- Trevor Rosenthal (who if im not mistaken we signed when he was injured in 2018 but never pitched with us), Alex Colome (would be my choice), Mark Melancon (wouldnt trust him as closer, great set up option though), shane greene, jake mcgee (would love him as a lefty set up option), Joakim Soria (probably my #2 option due to very high floor and proven track record of consistency), Jeremy jeffress, Darren O'Day (my #1 choice as a set up guy, love his side arm, track record of results, and ability to make righties uncomfortable), and of course kintzler is still out there.
If we dont go out and get contreras or benintendi i hope we use the money and just spend $15 million for next year to improve the bullpen and go after Colome, O'Day, and Soria/Mcgee and just create a super deep pen that can really come in handy if any of the starters take a step back or if we decide to play it super carefully with young guys like Sixto/Rogers/Cabrera.
