contreras and the cubs settled for 6.65 million in free agency. that is an absolute steal. if that's too much for us in an offseason where we no longer have to pay chen and havent made any moves we have serious problems. the guy is a top 5 C on a cheap contract at the only position we have no actual real option that we can consider a long term future starter in the organization. this move needs to get done ASAP. especially if they only want the super young prospects 3-4 years away from the big leagues. those guys are a crapshoot

A trade that would mend the Marlins most quickly for 2021 would be to acquire Contreras and Ian Happ from the Cubs. The Marlins then would have five Anderson level guys in the lineup with BA (ZIPs projected WAR of 3.0), Happ (2.8), Contreras (2.6), Rojas (2.5) and Marte (2.2). Happ could play OF/2B this season and take over CF in 2022-23.
How do you get those two? Start a deal with Bleday (ZIPs hates him) and Jesus Sanchez or Connor Scott.. Add Evan Fitterer, Nasim Nunez, Chris Mokma.and Alfaro. That's a lot in past signing bonuses to give up, but the Marlins outlook for 2021 would be very different. Toss in Isan Diaz if that tips the scale for the Cubbies.Last edited by Lee Stone; 01-18-2021, 08:19 AM.

Im just super excited to have a minor league year again to further evaluate so many different guys. This is a huge make or break year for so many guys after the year off, im excited to get more time to evaluate what we have.

Per sources Red Sox continue to be open to moving OF Andrew Benintendi. Marlins and several other clubs are pursuing. Miami has pieces that make sense and looking for RF help. Change of scenery type move, if it happens. It could.
Not my favorite move but I think benintendi is ready to bounce back after 2 weird years in Boston. If we could get him and Contreras for cheap id be ecstatic.
C- contreras
1b- Cooper
2b- Jazz/Isan
SS- Rojas
3B- Anderson
OF- Dickerson, Benintendi, Marte
That's a really good team and then you can give the OF prospects an entire year to develop more in the minors, then next year Dickerson and Marte are free agents. That's a really good idea to allow your prospects to develop more and then you have reinforcements if a guy explodes in the minors or one of the guys at the ML level struggle. And all 3 of Benintendi, Marte, and Dickerson wouldnt be an issue to trade mid season.
Would depend on the price though for Benintendi

Especially if the cubs are truly looking for only super young prospects for Contreras, given that benintendi's value probably isnt sky high, you could get 2 legit reallly good bats in him and contreras without having to give up anyone of huge significance prospect wise.

Which Miami prospects actually have "huge significance"? I'd say Cabrera and S Sanchez for sure. I still hold out hope for Jazz to hit, especially since he brings so many other virtues to the field. The guys you have to be willing to bail on are Bleday and J Sanchez. According to baseballtradevalues.com, Bleday's current value is 28.8M. That matches up with the two years of team control left on Contreras. CJ Abrams, the talent that the Marlins passed on to take the college hitter Bleday, has a current BTV of 63.3M! As far as ZIPs prospect rankings go, Bleday doesn't even scratch the top 100 (Sixto, Jazz, Rogers and Garrett are the only Marlins on the list). One more "vanilla" minor league showing for Bleday and he will become Colin Moran 2.0. (Moran became Jarred Cosart by the way.)
This is why I would package Bleday, J Sanchez, and a couple lower ranked guys for Contreras and switch-hitter Ian Happ. The Marlins would be a much better team.
