Here's the right up from the Zephyrs press pass about Sampson last year.

Dude had a 5.93 ERA in relief last year. Sure, let's try and start him in the majors.
Chris Sampson sucks and is a guy the organization doesn't give a shit about because he sucks.

Chris Volstad has sucked and is a guy the organization would like to turn around because he's a former 1st round draft pick who's still only 24.

Who would you rather have developing in the minors in a season that is now basically irrelevant?

    • And just for giggles. Let's take out Chris Sampson's 2 worst outings out of the pen for the Astros last season (which just so happened to happen on back to back nights)

      .1ip 4h 4r(4er) 0bb 0k 1hr
      .2ip 4h 4r(4er) 0bb 1k 2hr

If we take these numbers out, here was the rest of his season in Houston:

      29.1ip 35h 14r(12er) 8bb 15k 4hr

      3.71era

much prettier looking... when, you know.... you take out the worst 2 outings and stuff

      • Volstad is unlikely to turn his career around. He does not have true sinker, his secondary stuff is crap and he throws in low 90s. He doesn't even profile to be a 3 as was projected when he was drafted. If he were a 24 year old late round pick from another system he would have been released a long time ago.

        Chris Volstad = Future journeymen

        • What Ramp said.

2010- Pitched in 35 games with the Astros, going 1-0 with a 5.93 ERA in 30.1 innings. Gave up just two runs over his first 17 outings, spanning 16.0 innings
(1.13 ERA). Surrendered 12 runs over 2.0 innings in three games May 23-31, and went on the disabled list June 1 with rotator cuff tendonitis. Returned on June
24 and made 13 more appearances for Houston before being optioned to Round Rock, where he went 1-2 with a 2.35 ERA in 13 games.
This was such a ridiculous thing to quote. This guy did the exact same thing you did with Volstad by removing starts - except at least the two appearances removed by this guy were right before an injury, so not as retardedly random - but when this guy did it, you had a problem with it. You're being a real jackasshole

Well I don't think that's right to say. If he learns a new pitch or something, he can be a good starter down the road. He definitely has youth on his side.

Or he could be out of baseball in 2 years.

I'm glad you give up so easily on 24-year olds. Disregarding the fact that a lot of pitchers actually start making their major league debuts around the age of 24.

He's shown flashes of being a reliable major league starter (look at his non-Phillies June starts. He was even getting groundballs like crazy then with his sinker). He just needs to get some consistency.

Yeah that was probably two extreme.

Hasn't he been working on a slider for 2 years now?

My biggest problem with him is the fastball. It really doesn't move and he doesn't throw a two seamer. If he's going to turn his career around he needs a decent two seamer and a sharper curveball.

                            • Volstad is just way to inconsistent right now to remain a big league starter. One day he'll have seven innings with a two runs and then the very next start he go out and give up six runs in three innings. This could be like what happened with Nolasco a couple years ago. He could come back and be a stud (or a guy who can fill the #4 spot).
Miami Marlins. Channeling our inner 90s Devil Rays.

                              • This is the third year in a row he's going to the minors to work on stuff, I don't think he's suddenly going to become a stud this time around
