this is more to do with Volstad than it does with Chris Sampson possibly being called up

and for what it's worth, Volstad hasn't exactly "held down a spot" either

his last 3 seasons have been miserable

Volstad has never been able to spend an entire season in the majors either. And Sampson has been better than him in his time in the majors.

Which isn't saying much, because Volstad is terrible.

It's not like Sampson has pitched worse than Volstad, and it's not like Volstad's getting better. I don't think Sampson's a long term answer on a contending team, or even a major leaguer, but I'm not sure you can say those things about Volstad with any certainty at this point.
