Chris Volstad was already on a short lease before he took the mound last night. But he did nothing in his performance Friday to help himself.

An hour ago he was optioned to Class AAA New Orleans. The Marlins will make a corresponding roster move tomorrow.

The fact that they made the move, even thought the marlins are not exactly deep in startin pitching, speaks volumes for the team’s frustrations with their former first-round draft pick from 2005.

Volstad had left the clubhouse before the announcement was made so he was not available for comment.

He allowed four runs (three earned) in five innings last night, including three runs in the first inning. In all, he labored through 106 pitches.

Volstad essentially was put on notice after his start in Chicago last Sunday when he allowed three runs in the first inning after Florida had taken a 3-0 lead.

“I saw a young guy who’s been – how long in the big leagues, three years? It’s time for him to step up and get tough,’’ McKeon said after the Marlins hung that day on for a 7-5 win.

Volstad is 5-8 with a 5.58 ERA in 20 starts.
