the giants being buyers is absolute stupidity. its like the marlins for so many years who refused to acknowledge their team is in no way shape or form a contender but trading away prospects for mediocre players anyways.

When did any of us predict this to ever be written about the Marlins:
The star of this deal is Miami’s scouting department, on both the pro (which likely knew the background on Diaz) and amateur (which found Vallimont at a Division-II school in last years fifth round) side, even if Sergio Romo has a sizable impact on the postseason race. The Marlins flipped a rental reliever and recent fifth rounder for what might be a long term answer at first base. https://blogs.fangraphs.com/it-may-r...in-diaz-trade/

anderson with his 15th hr already. He is never gonna be a star but he's a damn good long term 3b until we get someone who we think is a star. Plus his OF/3b versatility is really gonna help moving forward if some of these OF guys dont pan out.

anderson and alfaro really seem like the perfect 6-7 hitters on a contender.

Gotta trade Castro and Walker for some lefties

Apparently Cards like Caleb - https://twitter.com/markasaxon/status/1155984914904256512.
I mean duh he's good.
Cards farm isn't that great depth wise, but they have 3 high end guys (one being a catcher and no way that's happening with Molina being ancient and Alfaro is solid w/ Banfield). You'd need Gorman (Top 40 prospect), Carlson (Top 100 prospect, 1st round pedigree), I. Herrera (ascending catcher), and Sosa (Rojas replacement) to even get the conversation started for me. Maybe another fleeting guy or some IFA or eat Castro's money. That's probably like $85 million in surplus value based on projections.
That's valuing Caleb as something like a 2.5 WAR starting pitcher (2.6 in his career over 186 IP) over 5 years with semi-notable salaries.
Hard to see the Cards doing something like that, but feel free to offer everything you got Cards.

Crazy trade idea of the day:
This originated from reading the Angels were interested in Zack Greinke.
To the Angels:
Caleb Smith
Jorge Alfaro
Wei-Yin Chen
To the Marlins:
Jo Adell
Jared Walsh
Even with Chen's contract, Smith is cheaper than Greinke. Trading Alfaro is tough, but Angels need a catcher and I'm thinking it would take Alfaro to get this done. For us we get a Top 5 prospect in baseball, a major-league ready bat and lou's coveted left-handed reliever in one guy. Plus we get rid of Chen and his dumbass contract. We're free to spend all kinds of money in Free Agency the next 3 years. (Gotta sign Cole in the offseason in this scenario)
I'm sure the Angels would never do it, but I thought it was a fun idea.

Hell. Give'em Brinson, Castro, and Walker too, and take back Cozart and Bour which absorbs their payroll.
Definitely a fun idea, but sadly not one I think they can take advantage of.

Good article on 40 man crunches - https://blogs.fangraphs.com/the-40-m...impact-trades/
Yankees, Rays, and Padres are going to lose multiple players so it makes sense for them to consolidate talent into a single asset.
