    Interestingly:

So I guess paid tickets were about the same as 2017, they just went to announcing actually people in the park.

Apparently the team lost 53M in 2018.
But next year or 2021 they won't have any of those Chen or Prado contracts right ? Hopefully they will have increased ticket sales meaning more revenue, also naming rights & a better TV contract ?

he's a good backend starter with 2 years of team control after this year. He will be able to get us something.

Id guess dean comes up for o'brien before the next game.

No way we get anything for him. Just look at Straily, straight up we got nothing for him. Urena is a bullpen piece on a good team. He's too wild and doesn't strike out enough batters.

Prado's deal ends after this season. Chen is here for 22M next year, but then done after that (the option won't vest). So yes, in theory by then the finances should be in much better shape.

I thought it was a typo when I saw 7/35.

              • Doesn't Chen have a weird thing in his contract where we're paying him even after his contract ends? Which enabled Loria to pay almost nothing of the huge contract he signed him to.

I thought 7/35 was bad then I read it has team options for the 8th and 9th years at $5 million a piece as well. WHAAAAAAAAAAAT???

This is what I found on Chen's contract:

                  -$13M signing bonus ($5M paid 11/30/17, $8M paid 6/30/18)
-16:$6M, 17:$9M, 18:$10M player option, 19:$20M player option, 20:$22M player option, 21:$16M conditional player option
-Chen must exercise 2018-20 options together within four days after the end of the 2017 World Series
-Chen receives 2021 player option if he 1) has 180 innings pitched in 2020 or 360 IP in 2019-20 and 2) is not on the disabled list at the end of the 2020 season, and 3) is healthy for 2021 spring training
-Total of $64.5M in 2016-21 salaries is deferred without interest
                  (16:$3M, 17:$4.5M, 18:$8M, 19:$16M, 20:$17M , 21:$16M)
                  Chen to receive deferred payments of $3M on 11/30/16, $4.5M on 11/30/17, $2M on 11/30/18, $6M on 6/30/19, $4M on 11/30/19, $9M on 6/30/20, $5M on 11/30/20, $15M on 6/30/21, $1M on 11/30/21, $15M on 6/30/22

What I'm not sure is if that deferred '21 $16M figure is accounting for the 2021 option, or if that's a deferral for the 2016-2020 guaranteed part of the contract.

We had this debate in the offseason, and the cumulative opinion was go with the $16-$17-$16 over 2019-2021, and that last reference to 2022 at the end is the 2021 option that will never vest.

It gets even more confusing as the luxury tax numbers don't line up with the actual numbers, but thankfully we can ignore that as the Marlins aren't approaching that.

I mentioned this in the offseason also. It's purely a luxury tax for the Yankees issue (and ignoring Ells no trade).

The Yankees could spread out the same money over three years with Chen's deal, versus 2 years with Ellsbury.

So do they need a little cap relief the next two years, and are willing to sacrifice some in 2021? That's the issue for the Yankees. Does that money buy them Keuchel or Kimbrel right now?

If I'm the Marlins, I'm doing it to clear 2021 payroll and happy to outright release Ellsbury if he won't play, but no idea what the Yankees are planning payroll wise.

                    • You know what’s not great either? Our much improved pitching staff. Alcantara’s start against Colorado looking like an anomaly. Not surprising considering his control issues throughout his young career.

This team is the worst. I’m going to watch the Rays instead.

                      • This is brutal......just brutal. 5-0 in the 2nd inning and you already feel like its a loss

                        • Is this team ever going to try something different like use an opener? Do they not watch other small market teams? The only thing worse than being cheap is being cheap and dumb. Some of our young pitchers seem to have trouble after one time through the order. Why not try something different? Wasn’t that the point of bringing in Romo? What about Tayron Guerrero? The Rays use flamethrowers in the 1st inning because opponents aren’t used to it. Why not check to see what Guerrero can do in an opener role? Maybe he can succeed like Stanek. A guy like Pablo Lopez seems like he’d be much more successful too in a bulk role. What do we have to lose? Another game?

Something smart ? Not in the Marlins DNA
