  • I was at the game in Atlanta tonight. We bought tickets on StubHub for $9.50 each (after fees) in Sec 340 and then we moved down to Sec 141 in the 3rd inning (Monday night game and by the looks of it, the Marlins drew 25 of their own fans). I caught a game last summer at SunTrust too.

SunTrust Park (and the surrounding Battery) was thought out 1000 times better than Marlins Park.

The only advantage Marlins Park has is unlimited refills for soda and King Cans for $12 instead of 16 oz beers for $8.50 at SunTrust.

My record lifetime in Atlanta is 1 Marlins win and 9 losses. It’s brutal.

Morosi reversed that report, saying a deal wasn't close (and obviously still hasn't happened).

Well, obviously it was better thought out - SunTrust Park was put in a nice area on a big plot of land where things could be built around it to build a nice/desirable complex. Marlins Park was put where the city had land available with no other thought beyond that, so aside from the west parking lot and the small east lots, there's little room around the park to build anything meaningful unless surrounding land is acquired; it also isn't in a nice area, so there's no demand/desire for businesses to move into the surrounding area, so unlike SunTrust where the park "comes with" an entire surrounding complex, Marlins Park is dependent on slow organic growth and neighborhood improvement. The team not being good (and therefore not drawing much) doesn't help in the quest to bring up the surrounding area and draw businesses into the area. That said, there have been a few new apartment buildings and other buildings going up around the area within the last couple of years. Whether that's because of the park or just because that's where land was available, I don't know, but it does help the neighborhood image some, but again, it's organic growth that happens slowly, and it hasn't happened immediately adjacent to the park itself yet.

      • Last day of trade deadline prediction- Ziegler to cubs or Sox, Dietrich and barraclough traded together to a mid level team or maybe the dodgers, steadily to Oakland for Mateo, Maybin wherever for IFA cash, and we hold everyone else

          Yep. It's a 4.5 over/under for me.

I think Barraclough, Dietrich, and Ziegler are sure things and someone from Straily/Castro/Bour/Realmuto/Urena/Steckenrider/Conley/Maybin gets moved, and maybe 2 hence the over/under.

Bummer Red Sox went with Kinsler as a cheaper option to Castro.

I'll take the under and will be very disappointed. Chances of Realmuto signing an extension with Marlins? Zero. Chances of Marlins getting a player as good as Robles in the off season? Zero.

              • This was posted on MLBTR a bit ago:

-The Cubs do not have an agreement in place with the Marlins, but they remain the front-runner to land his services, per MLB.com’s Joe Frisaro. However, other teams remain in the mix to acquire him, per Frisaro, who notes that the Indians, Red Sox, Dodgers and Astros have all scouted Ziegler in recent weeks.

-USA Today’s Bob Nightengale tweets that the Cubs are indeed expected to land a reliever today and are engaged with the Marlins in trade talks surrounding Ziegler (Twitter link).

-SiriusXM’s Craig Mish tweets that the Indians are still in the picture for Ziegler as well. Mish also suggested last night that the Marlins are aiming to move Ziegler to a team that can absorb the remaining money on his contract (roughly $2.95MM, as previously noted above) and also has international bonus pool money to spare. Miami was connected last week to top international prospect Victor Victor Mesa (per MASNsports.com’s Byron Kerr, on Twitter), so it’d be reasonable to see the Fish try to boost their pool as teams await Mesa to be cleared for free agency by MLB.
Do we really need to have the other team eat his remaining salary?

Ziegler has been so good the last 2 months, there's no reason to have to send money with him...especially when it's such a small amount left. But that's also not what Mish tweeted:

For Ziegler tomorrow connect the dots to a contender, with bonus pool money, that is also willing to take on some of his remaining 3 mil in salary & also doesn’t put that club above the tax. That’s why Ziegler is a little complicated.

good point. Team should be happy to pay Maybin or Ziegler in order to maximize the signing pool money. Same goes for Dietrich, Straily.

Luxury tax could impact some of them, so it could be more

I agree. They should eat everyone's money to get a better asset, considering these are lower amounts.

If Realmuto keeps this up and posts a 5+ WAR catcher season, they will do fine in the offseason if they can't move him for Robles now. That's still minimum $80 million in surplus value, which is a huge potential haul. I also find it hard to believe Realmuto turns down 6/$90-100 given catcher's falling off the earth, he will be 2 seasons from free agency, looking at maybe $12-15 million in arbitration, and that would be the 3rd highest value C contract of all time (Mauer, Posey).

I'm only going to be disappointed if Barraclough, Dietrich, and Ziegler aren't moved. Everyone's else value isn't going to shift much to November so there is no desperation. (Maybin also but he is "so whatever" it doesn't matter. He can be a waiver deal in August easily)

                        • More from MLBTR:

The Yankees have been in touch with the Marlins about both Cameron Maybin and Ziegler, reports Mark Feinsand of MLB.com (Twitter links). New York has reportedly been eyeing an extra outfielder with Aaron Judge and Clint Frazier on the DL, and Maybin would fit that bill, while Ziegler would further deepen an already solid ’pen by giving them a strong weapon against right-handed opponents.

Marlins are a special case (Remember Project Wolverine?} With $400 M of debt, extremely poor attendance, a terrible TV contract, etc., every dime is significant.

I would say, developing a better on the field product will impact the attendance and TV contract, so the nominal salary now will pay off when the bigger money hits with those. Hypothetically of course.

They also got $50 million from BAMtech sale remember, so they have a major hedge this season on top of normal revenue sharing. If they hook a minority investor, which they have been said to looking for, that debt situation starts turning around fast. I don't think it's that big of a negative, they just paid less cash for the franchise and get to pay off the remainder of the purchase price slower.

The team needs to get better. Spend money to make money.
