Are we ready to admit that Smeltzer kind of just fucking sucks? as we discussed at the time, he’s just a useless arm who can eat meaningless innings.
the guy might be one of the worst pitchers in baseball I’ve ever seen get a consistent run at the major league level.he’s a clownLast edited by fish16; 09-08-2023, 05:43 AM.

Just venting, but I feel confident this team would generate A LOT of interest if they dropped Bellinger, E. Rodriguez, Narvaez, retained Soler and Robertson (he isn't this bad or swap in a similar RHP veteran reliever), and traded Rogers+Okert+DLC for Joey Ortiz/similar next year, and then extended Arraez, Luzardo, Eury, Jazz, and Scott all at the same time. It would push them to around 18th in payroll (similar to Minnesota and Seattle) which I mean, should be a low expectation in a contending window. That would be $500m in new contracts easily which is a glitzy number to have press releases on, but it's something like 45 years of service time so this is aggregatively a $10-11m player for those 45 roster spots over years and years which is frankly not a lot on a big picture level. Especially when considering this is multiple multiple all-star level players being signed here. This is spread out over 5-7+ years easily and they can fill in club controlled guys around them as they pop up to deflect payroll. And that ignores you'd be doing 3 big arbitration buyouts to keep costs in check. Talk about a longterm core with Arraez, Edwards, Ortiz/Amaya, Burger, Bellinger, Jazz, Sanchez, Sandy, Eury, Cabrera, Luzardo, Eduardo, Garrett, Meyer, and the lefty relievers signed/controlled for the predominance of the rest of the decade + whatever they'd get out of guys like Berry, Cappe, Fulton, etc. working out. It's your entire starting lineup and rotation (besides catcher) with 4+ years of control and most longer than that.
Naravez, Fortes (Banfield)
Arraez, Bell (Johnston, Berry)
Edwards (Cappe)
J. Ortiz, Amaya (Nasim)
Burger, Berti
Bellinger, Soler (Burdick)
Jazz (Mesa Jr.)
Sanchez (Myers)
Sandy, Eury, Cabrera
Luzardo, E. Rodriguez, Garrett
Robertson, Chargois, Meyer (Bedner, Brazoban, Soriano, Maldonado, Sixto maybe)
Scott, Puk, Nardi, Weathers (Fulton, Monteverde)
We can dream, but this is very doable with a $140m-150m budget next year which literally is 18th in the sport this year. It would be nice if ownership gave a shit, because frankly, if it doesn't work out you can sell and make money as the franchise has no doubt appreciated in value and it's not like you couldn't firesale this core off in 3 years if nothing happens as these guys should mostly be players. Maybe one day we can have a slightly below average payroll and they want to invest in the business versus trying to nickel and dime a contender.
And I will add here, Tampa ownership is probably worse as if anyone should be splurging on a player or two with their payroll and team it is them. I think we'd all be even more upset if we perpetually had a 85-90+ efficient win Rays team making the playoffs, and they refuse to sign a luxury upgrade or two to push them over the top. Total bullshit ownership there too.

They are in desperation territory already and quite frankly, he is mowing down the AAA hitters and has a lot of MLB experience. I wouldn't mind seeing him back as a 1 time through guy, but he shouldn't be throwing more than that. They gotta survive the next 10 (Phi, Brew, Atl) to get to those double Mets and Pirates games. All hands on deck.
Also, having "MLB experience" isnt exactly promising as an option to me when he has a 6.12 ERA in 150 innings in that experience.Last edited by fish16; 09-08-2023, 09:52 AM.
