Gleyber is 21st in 2B WAR since 2020. That's 3 full seasons. And if we include 2019, aka the really good year, he moves to 14th for a 4 year spread. Jazz is 22nd with 700 less PA for perspective on the 3 year spread. 700 plate appearances.
Gleyber is good, and I think you can make an argument he is ascending with this K rate, but this is silly. He is only worth so much and Cashman is on crack if he thinks that Braxton, Cabrera, and more. He's worth a great MLB piece like Scott and because he's a position player, a bench rental like Wendle or a FV40 right hander. That's it. The only obstacle to this might be the Yankees not believing Peraza and Volpe can handle this today and that's not an unreasonable perspective even if longterm they will be fine.

Fangraphs had him 9th in WAR last year. He is one of the better 2b's in baseball. Tanner scott is not thoroughly mediocre for the first time in his career, and they have the same control.
If Gleyber is a 4 WAR player today through the end of 2024, he has roughly a $20m surplus value because he's going to make $16m bucks during all of this. If Scott is a 2.5 WAR player today through the end of 2024, he is roughly a $17m surplus value. FV40 throw ins and whatevers like Wendle make up the difference. This isn't rocket science. If the Yankees were to move their RP and want to drop salary, this isn't a bad move for them if they also get Maldonado or whatever chucked in.
