  • cubs had a miracle home run saving catch with 2 outs in the ninth last night to win, so they are going to be buyers at this point even if i think they would be better served by selling.

    • jon berti is all of a sudden on fire and having a really good year. since July 15th, he has brought his average from .270 to .300 and his OPS from .661 to .727. Hasnt stolen nearly as many bases as i thought he would have this year but he has been really good. OBP up to .343

Cubs have won 9 of last 10 and Marlins have lost 7 of last 10. Cubs are only a few games out of first in their division. Cubs have a far easier remaining schedule. And you think the Cubs should be a seller and the Marlins should be a buyer? Explain.

The cubs 2 best players are free agents to be, have a ton of value, and will be playing the reds and braves next week. They are 6th in the wild card race when only 3 teams make it. They are 3rd in their division. They were 7 games under .500 before getting to play 10 straight games against the nats, white sox, and cardinals. They will likely be buyers or at least stay the same, but i think if the trade deadline was a week later, they would perform poorly against the braves and reds next week and end up selling. If it was a week earlier, they would have sold. Good for them and their fans though, they should probably just go for it at this point. They had a decent run differential before the run, but they have been +37 the last 10 games against tanking teams that makes their run differential a lot different than it has been all year.

The marlins on the other hand have their entire core under contract for years to come with guys like Jazz, Sandy, Luzardo, Eury, Garrett, Cabrera, Arraez, Sanchez, etc. We're also 3 games in front of them and havent been in the playoffs in 20 years. Our run differential is mediocre, but it's really just 1 team that has dominated us to make it that way. If we play the braves in the playoffs we will be swept easily.

You’re on a Marlins board and you hate the Marlins. Explain.

              • the cubs are also 4.5 games behind the division lead, and have 2 teams in front of them. Those 2 teams are better than them. They are in the position that the marlins have been in a lot over the years. A decent team that is theoretically in it at the deadline, but not an actual threat realistically.

                  • Rumor is we’re interested in Michael Lorenzen.

Obviously, there’s interest because we could use a starter, but I also wonder if they’d consider using him as a 2-way player. Our outfielders aren’t good defensively, and he actually has been awesome at it when Cincinnati gave him the chance. He also has some power in his bat, and is probably more valuable than Garrett Hampson lol.

Would be an interesting bullpen arm too if we can get to the playoffs as I’ve seen his velo spike up to 100+ mph in the bullpen when he was with Cincinnati.

I’d be interested. Let’s make the trade happen this weekend since he’s already in town.

he has had 49 at bats since 2019. he would be a horrible hitter at this point. he wasnt a particularly good hitter when he was hitting. i think he's really interesting as a pickup because of that bullpen versatility. can really help us out of the bullpen keep us in games with multiple innings in case guys have bad or inefficient starts. Id like him, just feel like the price might be a little steep given our need to add at least 2 hitters as well.

I think you can follow a team and still be rationally objective.

“Rationally objective” is fine, but I’m pretty sure you predicted this team would be one of the worst teams of all-time this year…

                          • tanner scott has a mild calf strain apparently. Got to think he is going to go on the il for at least the minimum time which sucks.

I'd guess today we activate robertson, put Scott on the IL, and send down soriano when nardi comes back for the phillies series (he had a bad outing against of course the braves AAA team last night, so he will probably get 1 more outing this weekend and be back monday). Bullpen will be Robertson, Lopez, Puk, Okert, Chargois, Brazoban, Hoeing, Soriano. Soriano goes down for Nardi, Hoeing goes down for whatever pitcher we acquire before tuesday, and i can see chargois going too in a deal or getting DFA'd or if we have the option, sent down. He's been really bad since coming back and he doesnt strike anyone out. We need at least 1 more quality righty reliever before the deadline.

Your rationally objective prediction for the Marlins win total was passed before the all-star break.

I think I predicted 55 wins, so you are close to correct. I saw an offensively and defensively-challenged team and they have been every bit of that. Their current record is great, even if inexplicable.
