    • Another more importantly, Logan Webb just got 5/$90m extension (coming off two back to back 4 WAR years). Thank goodness Luzardo hasn't done that (yet?). Luzardo is 1 year behind him in service time.

Regardless, this new comp probably just cost the Marlins minimum $10m in a Luzardo extension + him coming out gangbusters indicating he may have that kind of upside. This was a very bad organizational decision to not sign him (assuming they didn't try of course).

Compounding this, I think Sandy would take issue if Luzardo got more money than him ($56m guaranteed) considering Sandy just signed before the recent salary inflation.

So to me, this means he is 5/$48-55m and the Marlins should get 2 options on the back end of that to get him to say roughly 7/$100m if both are optioned. I think if they did this in December it could have been $10-15m less. Not an insane differentiation yet over 5 years, but this could get scary fast based on teams are valuing these free agency years at $20+m bucks for guys 3+ years from free agency.

Take issue? If he didn't like the deal he was offered, he wouldn't have signed it. Contracts go up.

Not sure what you mean, but I'd take issue here in two ways, if something wasn't offered, or if it was a low-ball. If it was a fair offer he'd take it.

This is like a Reynolds situation. Obviously sign the guy and make it a fair deal. The Pirates are underselling him, hence no deal gets done and they look terrible. So since nothing is done, the Marlins are either being really dumb and not offering him anything, or being cheap in that offer. Same thing for Arraez and probably Jazz. They gotta make some bets on guys, and those 3 all fall into that bucket for me of betting on and start elongating the contending window (which hasn't even started because they refuse to spend money....). Practically, they can do this next offseason, but it'll just be that much more expensive if they all drop 3.5+ WAR seasons or so. Cue the - this is a cheap team so why not try and get guys cheaper? Doing all 3 of these guys right now could be saving you $10+m a year combined in 3 seasons and all of a sudden, that is becoming a significant part of the budget. That's Segura and Floro.

I believe he's referencing your statement about Sandy taking issue with Luzardo getting that deal. It would be tough, but I'm not sure what Sandy could do at that point, or what he would expect the Marlins to do.

Correct. If Sandy didn't like it, he wouldn't have signed.

I'm sure Babe Ruth wouldn't like his contract vs. today's deals too.

Players are always getting more year after year.

                Gotcha.

Yes it is symbolic, but it has the potential to create off the field issues IMO. I think Jazz or Arraez getting a larger deal wouldn't cause a stir..... but Luzardo? After Sandy just won the cy young? Basically, it's just another reason to sign Luzardo now as if he drops a 4 WAR season this year, he's going to definitely be more expensive than Sandy based on that Webb comp. It's just a win-win-win-win to do this now for me. Maybe my feelings are wrong on Luzardo, but I would plant my flag in him being awesome. I'd bet on him before Jazz right now TBH. And the expected contract wouldn't be outrageous even if he gets hurt again and just becomes a high leverage reliever. Basically low risk today IMO. I feel he'd be very open to a deal with his arm troubles, but maybe he bets on himself this year like Ozuna did when he turned down his extension, etc.

                • No jazz or Arraez in the lineup tonight. Jazz looked horrific against lefties Wednesday and Arraez jammed his finger.

If they polled the fans I’d have to think it’d be almost unanimous to incorporate the teal again.

Between that and the thing where they barely acknowledge that we won 2 titles, it’s just not recognizing the fan base and the market down here

If I’m not mistaken, both burdick and Edwards are on the 40 man. Both should be getting regular aaa at bats, but in a pinch which is why hampson is up here, one of them should be up here. Or iglesias. Did we cut him or what? He’s not playing in aaa. We also signed richard Rodriguez who has good major league experience and we need bullpen arms, and he never appeared in a spring game, also isn’t in the aaa roster, and no one has any idea where they are. The modern day pokey Reese’s of our time
