And, I'd still try and trade for Campusano with Pablo. This isn't the catcher solution even if he works out.

This deal isn’t about not wanting to pay Duvall’s option, but the fact that they were worried he’d decline it. I’m fine with trading him, but I have mixed feelings on the return. Jackson gives us some upside at a huge need, but are we going to go into 2022 with him and Alfaro as the guys? It’ll probably be too early to see if Jackson is going to be any kind of a long term answer, but I don’t think you can wait on upgrading the position if you want to win next year.

I would really like to think Jackson is the backup catcher plan and they are still pursuing a legitimate player for the position. Pretty underwhelming return for Duvall. I know he isn't great but still think they could have gotten more.Amy Adams, AKA Cinnamon MuffLogan Morrison: "If baseball didn't exist, I would probably be ... like a curler. Or a hairstylist."

Padres Get:
Pablo
Aguilar
Berti
Marlins Get:
Campusano
Hassell
Ha-Seong Kim
Hosmer
$35-40 Million
Kim and Rojas hold down the fort until hopefully Watson or Salas is ready to take over SS (long way out, but we have to hope one of those guys works out) Sign Kris Bryant and bring back Starling Marte on 3-year contracts, and by the time the Marte, Bryant, Hosmer and Kim money is coming off the board, our really youngsters like Watson, Salas and Hassell should hopefully be coming to fruition and ready to take over.
Use the payroll to buy the prospects. Hosmer is like the ultimate dead money in baseball. It's a good opportunity if Padres can part with the right players.

Like I don’t really care about Duvall so I don’t mind, but I’m not about to have hope for Alex Jackson.

He is a good flier to take on for a guy who they clearly thought would be declining his option.
My only point is that he shouldn't be our starting C next season.

.864 OPS in 593 career PAs at AAA, that's not a small sample size, and like fish16 mentioned, he wasn't playing at some hitter's haven. Ks are a definite concern, if we had dealt on of our pitchers and this was the catcher we were getting back than yeah I wouldn't be happy, but we traded Adam Duvall. Who was a nice pickup for us, but he was always going to be a short-term pickup, had a .277 OBP and was K'ing about 31% of the time himself.

Jackson is K'ing 32.8% of the time at AAA, which is too much, but it's not 40%. If he can put up .210/.290/.460 at the majors, that's one of the better hitting catchers in the majors, even if he is striking out 35% of the time.
