  • What if the organization is legitimately fine with Alfaro? That is a very real possibility.

Between saying that Sandy/Pablo are backend of the rotation starters and suggesting the FO might be legitimately fine with Alfaro, I'm not sure if you're being serious anymore.

He's playing as a 1.3 WAR catcher over 600/PA the last 3 seasons (total 750 PA). I think that's a pretty good sample size over 3 years. He is who he is at this point. He is a very low end starter and good backup. He is certainly someone that can be upgraded, but if they do get a super star 2B/SS and CF, they can probably live with him and draft another catcher 1st/2nd round next year. I'm not holding my breath, but we'll see.

Mid rotation to backend. I never said either were bad. They certainly aren't top of the rotation starters.

And the organization has spoke unusually glowing of Alfaro in the past and fairly recently to boot.

I'm not even sure how accurate WAR is for catchers. Alfaro seems worse than his WAR.

For example, Alfaro has been pretty terrible offensively. Most of his positive WAR this year comes from his defense, which...well, idk. He is consistently among the league leaders in passed balls. And this year, while his defensive WAR is good, pretty much every single pitcher on the staff pitches significantly worse when he catches.

            We need a new catcher.

            • That's why I don't even like him as a backup. He is a horrid hitter but his defense seems so...poor. From framing to receiving to calling a game. He has a strong arm and that seems to be about the limit of his tools.

-Padres have to do something with what LAD is doing, so you send them Pablo and Aguilar and take back Campusano (the target), Hassell (their # 4 prospect, back end top 100 quality), other lower prospects outside their top 5 (not going into detail here, but 2-3 FV 45/40 guys they like are coming back here), and the kicker and how this gets done........... agree to absorb some of Eric Hosmer (he is owed 4/$59 somehow + the remainder of this year which is probably like $8m). I think San Diego needs to send over $40+ million dollars here, so this becomes a situation of the Marlins absorbing around $20-25 million (which they can afford spread out over 4+ seasons which is my overall point here). That's some real value for the Padres, as they've effectively traded Hosmer's salary for what Pablo is going to get in arbitration which is massive for them as Hosmer sucks. They can live without all the prospects, but this has gotta hurt them somehow which is what trading Campusano does. They can pray old friend Nola holds up for a few years. This is crazy, but this franchise won by paying Mike Hampton to play somewhere else. Absorb some Hosmer, get Campusano, and that problem is sort of solved for 3+ years as he's going to be given every chance to succeed with his prospect stature.

-Send the Orioles an entire 6 man starting rotation - Pablo, Meyer, Cabrera, Elisier, Garrett, and one of Thompson/Poteet/Neidert - for Adley and Mullins. Marlins carry on with Sandy, Rogers, Sixto, Lazardo, and whoever is left of Thompson/Poteet/Neidert scraping innings, with fingers crossed Eder, Nicolas, and McCambley work out behind them. Tell the Orioles go buy some bats ya filthy animals

In reality, I am thinking they sign someone like Tucker Barnhardt in free agency (they are going roll forward with Stephenson. for sure), and try and trade for a better 2B/SS and CF. Ruiz was certainly the guy to get, but not even Pablo as centerpiece compares to Max and Trea. We'll see.
I like the way you're thinking lou. What if we threw Ha-Seong Kim in the deal? Between Kim and Hosmer, they have about $100 million left on their contracts, each through 2025.

                Padres Get:

                Pablo
                Aguilar
                Berti

                Marlins Get:
                Campusano
                Hassell
                Ha-Seong Kim
                Hosmer
                $35-40 Million

Kim and Rojas hold down the fort until hopefully Watson or Salas is ready to take over SS (long way out, but we have to hope one of those guys works out) Sign Kris Bryant and bring back Starling Marte on 3-year contracts, and by the time the Marte, Bryant, Hosmer and Kim money is coming off the board, our really youngsters like Watson, Salas and Hassell should hopefully be coming to fruition and ready to take over.

                • Wow, the Twins get Austin Martin and Simeon Woods-Richardson for a year and a half of Jose Berrios. The Marlins should really be able to cash in on their pitching.

Reports are that they’re keeping Aguilar. I’m not going to build the day up in my head because I’m starting to think nothing big is coming. I think the big moves might come in the offseason.

Id be all for Lou’s moves, though. That would be awesome.

                        • really like the duvall trade. jackson is a former top pick and has potential. Low BA but has really good power. I think they realized that because duvall has a mutual option for next year we werent keeping him because he would get more money next year. Good deal. at the very least it gives us another option to see at C instead of Leon or alfaro.

                            Fangraphs had him at 8.

Basically we paid Duvall a little less than $1.5 million for 100 games, and got a pretty good Catching prospect who is ready to play now.
