They shouldn't have been in that situation to begin with if Bass just does his job, and/or they may have lost on the next batter anyway, but that's a pathetic way to lose the game. The whole point of replay is to get it right - why bother having it if you can't use it to get it right?

If it's a close pitch that wasn't called a strike and hits him....do I like it, no, but at least it's debatable. This was CALLED STRIKE 3, and then the ump is like wait, he says it hit him. And it's clear in the replay he stuck his elbow out to get hit.

Umpires don't like being wrong and this was a major miscue. There will be repercussions. Conforto's strike zone just got a lot bigger for the rest of this season.

Ump's original instinct was correct. Which makes it so baffling to why he stuck to his guns on the hbp even when he had a second to think and discuss it with the other umpires.

Ironically (or maybe this is exactly why you brought this up), strikes were called on both of those players who were hit (though they were swinging strikes).
