it seems really dumb given whats happening in the country and especially in 3 states where so many teams reside (cali, florida, and texas) and all the reports from the players about the lack of consistency and testing from the league that they are really trying to start playing in 2 weeks. i just do not see it and i just see no way this season actually ends as planned. buster olney agreed with me a week or so ago and kurkjian has said similar things. i just hate wasting this year of service time on a guy like sandy and others for, what, maybe 8-10 starts on a non-contending team? just really sucks that we cant say fuck this year and give a team of career minor leaguers for 2 months, save the full year of service time for prospects, and roll it over to next spring when hopefully things are normal again.
Im conflicted between wanting to evaluate all these guys like monte and many others and also wanting a full year of service time actually being used for a full year of development rather than a cup of coffee for 2 months. I am praying they see the bigger picture with these young guys. Monte id be indifferent to but if its true that it only takes 5-10 games of the roster thats kind of a no brainer for me. not sure if thats the case though.

on a completely unrelated note, who are some of the guys that pop out in your mind when you think of guys who you thought were going to be absolute studs for us and turned out to be duds. and not just prospects that didnt pan out, i mean guys that had some periods of major league success and just couldnt take the next step. That guy #1 for me is hermida. his (i believe) 2007 season where he was an absolute monster the 2nd half of the year and had a shot to hit .300 for the year at the end had me so hopeful and he just could not figure it out. ended up trading him for nothing.
Chris Coghlan also had a similar experience in my mind where he was just an absolute force when he came up that year to win rookie of the year and just couldnt put it together afterwards. he ended up having a couple decent years as a platoon guy for the cubs but baseball is such a mystery when it comes to guys like cogs.
Mike Jacobs to a lesser extent although he never had a run like those two, he just had the hr swing and the prospect status to make it seem like he was a long term piece. ended up trading him for the artist formerly known as leo nunez.

I have been trying to get confirmation of the formula, but in the interim, Jeff Passan of ESPN confirmed the formula as A * (186/B), which is the same mathematically as (A/B) * 186. Note that even under this formula, the grace period is really tight. I am not sure if Passan was making an assumption when he provided a fraction that included rounding, or whether the March agreement provided for rounding to the nearest integer, but let’s suppose a player only gets 61 regular days of service before the conversion formula: (61/66) * 186 = 171.90. If we round up, that would mean a player, like Dylan Carlson, for example, would miss a year of service if he was left off of the active roster for 6 days. If we don’t round up, he would miss a year if left off for only 5 days. I will provide an updated roster analysis later today, but for this and other reasons, Dylan Carlson is not at all a lock to open the season on the active roster.
This is from a cardinals site but if that's all it takes to avoid the year of service time that would be so easy to avoid. Guys like monte would be obvious but id also look out for a guy like sandy alcantara struggling slightly and then being sent off the roster for 2 weeks to "Find it" and then "coincidentally" getting an extra year of him.

and for those who keep comparing us to korea and how they are playing with no issues- we had more cases in Florida on Saturday alone then the entire country of South Korea has had throughout the entire pandemic.

The #Cubs announce that manager David Ross and five other Tier 1 individuals are awaiting their completed Saturday test results and will not attend this morning’s workout.
“Out of an abundance of caution, we think it makes sense for the six of us to wait for clarity,'' Ross said.Last edited by fish16; 07-13-2020, 11:28 AM.

The interesting takeaway to me, other than the fact that they're a lot higher on him than the consensus, is that it appears that the Marlins aren't going to let service time impact their thinking. All they'd have to do is hold these guys out for 5-6 days, and it appears that at least one, and as many as 3 of their top prospects could be on the roster from day 1. I get that in a truncated season, if you really are going for it, and really believe they are some of your best hitters, holding them out for that long can make an impact, but you have to wonder if it's the right move long term. Monte being older puts him in a bit of a different category, but the point still remains.

I like Lewin a lot, but still he has less than 250 ABs above A-Ball, why would you rush him if you brought guys like Dickerson, Joyce and Aguilar in? Don't you have to at least try to get something out of your investments? Do i think that it's possible that Lewin could up better numbers than the Aguilar/Cooper combo in a 60-game season? It's certainly possible, but not enough to where we'll be sniffing the playoffs, so then what's the point?
The only somewhat acceptable reasoning to me would be if they said for development purposes we think we need to get these guys in live games. Which I could see, but I don't know what the plans are for potential fall/winter leagues, if any.

Been watching a lot of KBO recently (well almost every game ESPN televises, so maybe more than a lot.) If the Marlins don't figure out their CF situation in a couple of years I'd love for them to make a run at Jung-Hoo Lee. Love the kid's swing, just 21-years old, love the power development we're starting to see, and with his body type there's room to add muscle, I really like his future.

On a different front, a couple of my personal favorites are doing very well. Eddy Alvarez is busy securing himself a spot with the team ... hitting very well and capable of manning SS,2B and 3B. The other is Tyler Heineman. With Posey out for the season, he is now the front runner for the Giants starting job at C. For a catching weak team like the Marlins, his release was inexplicable.
Sandy Alcantara to start the opener? Sure, why not. He was the Marlins least effective pitcher in spring training and again in summer training.Last edited by Lee Stone; 07-14-2020, 07:36 PM.

Wound't holding a player down for 5 games make it obvious that we're just doing service time shananigans? Another Bryant situation.
Also, if they are "really going for it". A 0-5 start is the end of the season, or a 5-0 start can be the push you need to make it to the playoffs. I don't care either way. I honestly think if they believe they can make it, why not? Players develop, we get an exciting year after all the Sh** that has gone down and we will have to play those players anyway in 2021.

One of a number of mystery picks by the Marlins in the 2020 draft.
